Latest News from USA:
Sri Lankan delegation dominates UN summit
Sept 22, 2006
Sri Lanka?s 54-person delegation to the recent United Nations General Assembly in New York dominated proceedings through sheer weight of numbers. Speaking at a press conference, U.S President George W. Bush said, ?We were very impressed with the number of people who attended - clearly this Sri Lanka place had a lot to talk to about. Thakshin (Sinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand) wanted to discuss the coup in Bangkok but he only had four people with him so he couldn?t have been that serious; I told him to send me an e-mail?.
United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan commented, ?The summit was extremely productive; I spent a lot of my time talking with President Mahinda Rajapakse about Sri Lanka?s security problems, the Chinese delegation had a series of meetings with Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam to discuss investment opportunities and I believe President George W. Bush spent most of his time with some Sri Lankan lady discussing the difficulties her son was having with the SAT exam?.

The US is perceived in some cases justifiably as the bully of today, but if its not us today it will just be someone else tomorrow
Mig29C

Wonderful way of Gunboat Diplomacy.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/5369198.stm
The US threatened to bomb Pakistan 'back to the stone age' unless it joined the fight against al-Qaeda, President Pervez Musharraf has said.
General Musharraf said the warning was delivered by former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to Pakistan's intelligence director.
for what its worth this armitage dude aka as a one tooth wonder was also responsible for south asian affairs and talks a lot about stuff he doesnt have a good grasp on. How he survived two terms is beyond me.

The quest for peace has to be genuine.
Mig29c,
I generally agree with the additional comments you made to my cursory summary of 'what is to be done' points. What I would emphasize is the necessity of a 'people to people' dialogue/movement led by a grassroots leadership and involving regular workers, farmers and small business people. I don't believe that the present leadership on either side has any real intention to make peace. There is too much money and power at stake in continuing the war for the corrupt leaders presently to do anything more than 'play at making peace'. The cynical games played by GOSL/LTTE at peace-making has only further soured the mood of the people who are fed up with the misery of war but are just as weary of the promise of peace.
but if its not us today it will just be someone else tomorrow .. and that is the undeniable truth, as I meant to summarise earlier .. the corruptibility and the quest for greed is just too strong in most of us.
Regarding US empire building: I hope you would agree that even amongst international relations theorists, your particular interpretation based upon 'human nature' is just one amongst a host of different possible theoretical approaches (neo-realists).
At its base it is more a metaphysical argument relying on some suprahistorical idea of a immutable human nature. You could just have easily said, 'God decrees that man is sinful therefore his earthly kingdoms will always be corrupt and iniquitous'. But as one who does not subscribe to a Judeo-Christian-Islamic conception of God I cannot kneel before your rather misanthropic prognosis for humanity.
I susbscribe to the theory that human beings make their own 'nature'. A cursory glance at history will show that every empire, in every form of social domination the rulers have relied on arguments of the inevitability of such domination using 'god', 'human nature' etc to justify their rule. Humanity has made their way from slavery to the present day not by believing in the inevitablity of anything except perhaps their own freedom.
Your 5 point is quite interesting .. if you don't mind me asking Mr.Vimukthi, are you a socialist???
TO preface my answer, i would say that the parties that subscribe to such names and countries which claim such systems are none that I believe are socialist. I beleive in the great potential of human solidarity. I don't believe in the system of capitalism which posits the private pursuit of profit as the most important human endeavour. I believe other endeavours, caring for each other, the pursuit of leisure, the pursuit of art, living in sync with our environment and other things are more important than the pursuit of profit. The World Social Forum and the new anti-capitalist movements that crystallized after Seattle 1999 are the beginings I believe of searching for a contemporary alternative to the imperialist system. |

On the contrary Mr.Tamilcanuck it is you that has always shied away from most of my questions to you, as I recall by your infamous statements:
''so dont feed the shark'' ..
'' my personal vow to keep away from you has been strenghtened. so hence i wont/cant respond to your postings...''
.. I have always responded to all your questions.
So taking the easy way out is really your tactic .. as I said last week .. you are yet to respond to my last post to you .. well as you put it:
I aint going fishing!
In hindsight you are right .. it's a non issue .. your never there
Take care Sir :o) |
