LTTE arms ship came from Indonesian port

The Sri Lankan Defence spokesman, Keheliya Rambukwella, said in Colombo on Tuesday, that the LTTE arms ship, which the Sri Lankan Navy and Air Force sunk about 100 nautical miles off Batticaloa in Sri Lanka on Sunday, was coming from an Indonesian port.
The gun runner was detected by a friendly foreign government, and the vital intelligence was communicated to the Sri Lankan authorities, he said.
From the look of the vessel and the explosions, which took place on it, it was evident that it had board a large quantity of artillery shells and SAM missiles, Rambukwella said.
The LTTE's move to equip itself to face the Sri Lankan Air Force in any future military conflict had thus floundered.
The absence of anti-aircraft missiles had been a major chink in the LTTE's armour in the recent series of military operations.
The downed gun runner was of a length of 30 to 35 metres and was armed with two 23 mm double barrel guns.
'The 23 mm guns had kept us engaged for four and half hours,' said Commodore DKP Dassanayake, the naval spokesman.
He explained that the under International Maritime Law, the navy of a country could intercept a vessel in international waters and seek its details. And the vessel was obliged to provide the details.
But in the case of the downed LTTE vessel, it did not respond to a call to stop. Instead, it opened fire.
Subjected to heavy fire, the Navy had to call for help from the Trincomalee naval and air bases.
The Air Force's Kfir supersonic aircraft crippled one of the vessel's engines making it a sitting duck for the two Sri Lankan ships and aircraft.
The navy did not plan to recover the sunken armaments because the depth was too much, Com Dassanayake said.
It may be recalled that in 1993, MV Ahat, with the LTTE commander Sathasivam Krishnakumar alias Kittu and a large quantity of armaments on board, was sunk by the Indian Navy in the seas off the northern Jaffna coast. |

The Tamil Tiger commanders of the East are tangled in a power struggle that will further weaken their hold in the East, according to informants monitoring Tiger movements in the east. Bahnu, the former special Commander of the Batticalao and Amparai district have clashed openly with Ramesh, the newly appointed Commander of Vaharai sent from Vanni. After the verbal duel it is reported that Ramesh left with his loyalists to Thoppiyagala forest area.Bahnu has made moves to take control of Vaharai by bringing the Jeyanthan Brigade in the area under his control.
Sources in Batticaloa claimed that people have seen Ramesh and his loyalists entering Batticalao - Government control region yesterday in his attempt to creep into the Thoppiyagala forest area.
Even though Bahnu has been stripped of his responsibility as the Special Commander of the Batticalao ? Amparai districts, he continues to be holed up at present in Vaharai after the fall of Sampur to the Government forces. As all routes to Vanni through Government controlled areas of Trincomalee are heavily patrolled and monitored by the Government forces Bahnu and his men are unable get into Vanni.
This blockage has forced Bahnu and his men to remain in Vaharai, an area which is officially under Ramesh. Bahnu has made moves to take control of Vaharai by bringing the Jeyanthan Brigade in the area under his control. Bahnu?s attempt to usurp his powers has alarmed Ramesh, who has been sent from Vanni to be in charge of Vaharai .
This issue erupted in a verbal duel which had been going on earlier. It culminated in Ramesh shouting at Bahnu: 'You are going to loose even Vaharai now like the way you all lost Sampur.'
After the final shouting match, which lasted for several days, Ramesh, it is reported, has left Vaharai to Thoppiyagala where the newly appointed Batticalao ? Amparai District Commander Jeyam is stationed.Ramesh shouting at Bahnu: 'You are going to loose even Vaharai now, like the way you all lost Sampur.'
Earlier Ramesh was removed from the position of special Commander for Batticalao ? Amparai region on the grounds of his failure to bring the Karuna faction in the region under control. Subsequently Bahnu took over the control of the region.
It is now alleged that during Bahnu?s period Karuna?s faction has grown into a fully organized politico-military organization. Today the Karuna faction called Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) has grown as a serious threat to LTTE in the East |

You are mistaken .. it was a cheap trick by the LTTE to 'put the Muslims against the Sinhalese', and more particulatly to 'tie down' the STF trying to maintain law and order in an area where they are stationed. LTTE now find themselves unable to fight the SL military head-on, and are resorting to trickery and subterfuge.
Normally these LTTE rascals are thorough-going .. they see to it that all are eliminated when they go on a killing-spree of this kind. But in this case, when the STF went on to investigate what happened to the 'missing' Muslim workers(at the urging of Muslims from the area), they found one person still alive. They brought him back .. and he is now recovering in hospital. This Muslim person, has come out clearly with what happened .. those who'd attacked and killed the Muslim workers had been dressed in STF type uniforms, but while going-on with the slaughtering, they had been jabbering to each other in Tamil ! | We must separate EPDP terrorism from the North. This murderer will do anything for money. His henchmen are those who man the white van to kidnap civilians and kill. One such victim was killed last week. He was just 16 who lost his father due to cancer and his only brother and helpless mother mourn his loss. This butcher Devanda will pay for his sins. |
