Separating LTTE terrorism and Tamil grievances vital says Sri Lanka Minister Douglas Devananda

In a telephone interview with Asian Tribune, Sri Lanka`s Mminister of Social Services and Social Welfare and the leader of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party, Douglas Devananda said that the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration is currently in a domestic and international diplomatic endeavor that no previous regimes have attempted or undertaken to distinguish between LTTE terrorism and legitimate grievances of the Tamil peoples.

Devananda who is now in New York with President Rajapaksa`s delegation to attend the United Nations General Assembly further told that previous Sri Lankan regimes failed to isolate the Tamil Tigers nationally and internationally because they allowed both these issues, terrorism and legitimate Tamil grievances, to remain as two sides of the same coin making it difficult to politically and militarily defeat the Tiger outfit and isolate them internationally.

When this correspondent asked whether this was the reason that the international community was of the impression that it was the Tamil Tigers who are championing the Tamil cause in Sri Lanka, Minister Devananda, a staunch opponent of the LTTE, answered in the affirmative.

He reiterated the Rajapaksa regime`s priority to separate these two issues to militarily defeat the LTTE and find a lasting political solution to the legitimate grievances of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. However he said that Sri Lanka`s current crisis can only be solved through a political solution.

When asked what measures the Government of Sri Lanka would take to address the grievances of the Tamils, Devananda talked about amending the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution to strengthen the provincial council system. ?The North-East Provincial Council does not have a political leadership and that was the reason that the administrative cadre had to work with the LTTE. I have proposed a political leadership to the North-East Provincial Council so that its administration could break away from the influence and interference of Tamil Tigers. This was only an initial step in the direction of devolution of political and administrative power to the periphery?. He has proposed more powers to the provincial council system in amending the Constitution under Section 154 (9.2) of the Constitution that can avoid holding a nation-wide referendum.

?Political and military campaigns should go separately, militarily to defeat the LTTE and politically to separate the Tamil populous from the Tigers in search of a political solution,? Minister Devananda further noted.

He said President Rajapakse has to do a lot of convincing that these are two separate issues: Tamil Tiger terrorism and legitimate grievances of the Tamil people. `And that`s exactly what he doing here in New York,` the Minister told `Asian Tribune.`

The Sri Lankan minister diplomatically avoided answering when this correspondent asked as to why the international community, especially the United States, does not treat LTTE terrorism the way it treats Al Qaeda Global Terrorism. He said he is at loss to understand why.

The Minister told `Asian Tribune` that he has already presented a set of a three-stage proposal to strengthen the provincial councils, amend the constitution and get the proposals from the current All Party Conference to strengthen the periphery while meeting the demands of the Tamil people. `I am not interested in the LTTE when I forward these proposals. My sole endeavor is to fulfill the legitimate grievances of the Tamil people and find a political solution to the national issue,` he reiterated.

This poodle is hoping the LTTE can be defeated so he can run his little fiefdom in Jaffna, elected by no one and representing only himself, what a joke.

I can answer this question:

The Sri Lankan minister diplomatically avoided answering when this correspondent asked as to why the international community, especially the United States, does not treat LTTE terrorism the way it treats Al Qaeda Global Terrorism. He said he is at loss to understand why.

While US fight Al-queda in a foriegn state leaving her citizens safe, while Pakistan help Kashmiri rebels in India keeping Pakistan controlled Kashmir Safe, while Israelis fight the Hezbollah of Lebonnan it is not easy to treat LTTE in the same spectrum because LTTE is a homegrown problem. When fights erupt between LTTE and SLDF they are both at the bay of killing Sri lankan Citizens at large.
