LTTE, SLMM discuss opening A9 road
Saturday, 16 September 2006 - 9:45 PM SL Time

The international truce monitoring group in Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tiger rebels on Friday discussed the issue of opening the main highway linking the capital Colombo and the northern Jaffna peninsula, the truce monitoring team said.

Thorfinnur Omarsson, the spokesman of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), said the issue figured high on the talks between the Head of the SLMM Lars Johan Solvberg and the LTTE`s Head of the political wing S. P. Thamilselvan.

The A9 highway between Colombo and Jaffna has been closed since the fighting broke out between the government troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels early last month.

`We discussed the opening of the A9 which is one of the fundamentals of the cease-fire,` Omarsson said.

The road closure by both the rebels and the government has added to the humanitarian crisis involving a large number of displaced persons in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

The dispatch of essentials to the north is now done through the long route of sea transport.

The A9 highway was opened in February 2002 with the Norwegian backed cease-fire after being shut down for over five years.

The visit of Solvberg, the new head of the SLMM, was first to the rebel areas since assuming office early this month.

The truce monitoring group has now withdrawn from the conflict zone after clashes broke out late July.

However, the two sides still maintain that they abide by the Norwegian backed truce.

Did Barber (tell) SLMM chief what happened to fuel bousers? Poor LTTE butchers ran out of food so want some food from GOSL and NGOs. They easily can snatch some when it goes through A9.

I have a question for all you pundits.

Is the Government of UK and Northern Ireland required to extradite Anton Balasingham if the Government of Sri Lanka requests so?

I am aware that there is no formal extradition treaty between the two countries, however, not having a treaty does not necessarily mean that accused are NOT extradited from the UK as happened in the past.

So what's your take on this matter?

GOSL has set the precedence of having face to face negotiations with him and his organization.

Western diplomats too had negotiations with the likes of Slobodan Milosevic; before things started to go wrong for him. You see 'precedence' in nothing in internationl politics when it comes to terror suspects.

However, I do agree, there is no better a scene in the world than to see Mr. Prabakaran (that's not his last name now, is it?) and Mr.Rajapakse facing trial in Netherlands for crimes against the people of Sri Lanka.

Compare with your junk. To know the size difference, just check the size of the ppl on the LTTE dingy's and the Dvora.

Terrorism will be fought with everything the proud Sri Lankans have... White vans, blue Mo-bikes, Green UNPers, yellow monkeys, black MBRLS, fake peace-talks, lightening-speed Kfirs, fast attack crafts, proud soldiers and pretty girls to lure intimacy-starved LTTE terrorists...

Just clench your teeth and watch how much red hot Tamil (terrorist) blood is spilled....by Tamils themselves.

Accept at least now, that pre-LTTE time was better for the Tamils.
