Future talks: Karuna asks for his pound of flesh
Saturday, 16 September 2006 - 2:37 AM SL Time

Karuna faction of the LTTE yesterday said it had written to the Co-chairs that any future talks between the government and the LTTE would not be complete if their party was not included in the negotiations.

A senior spokesman for the organisation said that the Karuna faction held power in the Eastern Province and it had a large following who detested Prabhakaran`s terror. Hence if talks were to be held in Oslo, as speculated, the Karuna faction should have representation there to articulate the grievances of the Tamils of the Eastern province, he said. That, he said, was the responsibility of the Eastern Tigers and not the Wanni Faction.

Talks would certainly fail, if the Co-chairs failed to accommodate Karuna`s representation, he said.

However, he said the Karuna Faction anticipated resistance from the LTTE to their demand and that would embarrass the Co-chairs.

European Union has recently recognised the fact that the Karuna faction should involve themselves in the peace negotiations, in an EU Parliament resolution adopted on September 7. It calls for `an immediate, comprehensive and veritable end to hostilities including political assassinations and suicide bombing`, and asks `Prabhakaran and Karuna to resume peace negotiations on a constructive basis with the government of Sri Lanka without delay.`

The Karuna faction is scheduled to make a written submission to the Sri Lanka government as well.

articulate the grievances of the Tamils of the Eastern province,

Grievances of Wanni Tamils
Grievances of Eastern Tamils

Grievances of South-western tamils?

Grievances of Muslims?

This peace talk is becoming more of a joke.

GoSL should accept their request and discuss it with co-chairs.

Last time the talking point was Karuna. So this time make sure to bring tKatuna to table so that LTTE could negotiate with them directly.

Address the root cuase...

perhaps LTTE would request them a written pledge ..:)

I agree. Then there need not be hours of miscommunication. LTTE can directly talk with karuna representitives.

But Muslims voice also should be heard. Muslims have been subjected to ethnic cleaning and violence/

Prabhakaran and Karuna to resume peace negotiations on a constructive basis with the government of Sri Lanka without delay.

Is Karuna still here in Sri Lanka! Why shouldn't he come out and talk about Eastern Tamils' grievance. We only see so called 'Karuna Amman Said' or 'Karuna Amman Warned' interviews.

Who is backing up him?

Who does want to see this peace talk to fail miserably?

Everybody knows that if you press this precondition on LTTE, it won't come to table!
