Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation to appeal High Court ruling
Monday, 11 September 2006 - 6:00 AM SL Time

The Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) is seriously considering to appeal the recent Colombo High Court ruling which saw the freezing of its accounts for a six-month period.

TRO project consultant Arjunan Ethirveerasingam told the `Asian Tribune` that his organization is currently holding discussions with legal experts as to what their future course of action should be, and was also looking at the possibility of appealing the court decision.

`We are going to make every effort to secure the release of our funds,` he said. But according to Mr. Ethirveerasingam, apart from the private banks informing them of the TRO accounts being frozen, the organization has not received any official charge sheet from either the Central Bank or even the Courts spelling out the charges.

`But our lawyers are at work trying to obtain the charge sheet after which our next step will be decided on,` he noted.

The TRO official also categorically denied that his organization had any links to the LTTE. `If we are to enter into a LTTE-controlled area, as a regular procedure, we approach the LTTE to gain permission to get into the area. This is normal; we apply the same rule when entering government-controlled areas too,` Mr. Ethirveerasingam said.

Since registering with the Government of Sri Lanka as a charity, TRO has responded to all requests for financial and project information made by the Ministry of Social Services, the Ministry of Foreign Resources and the Parliamentary Select Committee on NGOs promptly and exhaustively. There have never been any follow-up questions or requests to testify before any committees or courts, the organization added.

On Tuesday the Colombo High Court reaffirmed the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank`s decision to freeze all accounts of the TRO.

The organization also claimed that the frozen funds amounting to approximately Rs. 75,000,000 (US$ 750,000) were targeted for Tsunami-related projects which would benefit the Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala communities of the North and East.

Ultimately it is democracy. In GOSL, TRO is even allowed to chellenge their cause in the Supreme court. Hope that LTTE does not execute their threat on the officials of the Central Bank. Will there be a another bomb to bring it down?

OK.

TRO can have their grievance heard at appeal court.

Where should, the appeals of Tamil civilians harassed by the LTTE, be addressed to?

Vini

The grivences of Tamils will be heard in the Kangaroo courts in Wanni. Velu could over rule the rulings of Kangaroo Courts as he did by releasing IP Bopitiya.

Who knows... The verdict would be on TRO's favour.

The 'system' works... very well in Sri Lanka.

That's why this 'Tamil Grievance' issue should never be allowed to be make scapegoat for the raw murders of proud security forces protecting all citizens.

That's why it's extremely necessary... NOT TO CONFUSE... LTTE'S TERRORISM with PERCEIVED 'TAMIL' GRIEVANCES.

LTTE MAD DOGS ARE MAD... THEY MUST BE CULLED.

Hi mavilaru / chandana24,

How are you?

Way back ... months ago... when I started describing our security forces as 'proud' so many folks had doubts... some others insulted.

But what has SLA proved today?

It's very naive of some of us to take for granted the dangers of the job our troops do... and the luxury of security we enjoy... whatever the condition.

You see, in democratic societies, people value the safety and security they enjoy... because of the services of these law enforcement folks. We should not feel or think smaller.

Sri Lanka is still striving to a reach a higher level... but nonetheless the prevailing services of SLA should be appreciated... by kids to senior citizens to visitors.... remembering that no institution is perfect, anywhere.

My salute and respect for our proud armed forces!!

Appeal to Kilinochchi high courts....

If you had every thing, why did you even bother opening accounts in that 'south' where all bad people are living...Why could TRO open accounts with Elam Bank in Elam Krones or Dollars or Rupees ?

So you want to be in that part of Sri lanka too..

HA HA HA....
