The Sri Lanka-Nepal Business Council last week expressed appreciation of a decision made by the Nepali cabinet to commence four direct Katmandu-Colombo flights weekly.
The new flights have been recently announced by Nepal`s Tourism Ministry.
The Council said in a statement that the non-availability of direct flights inconvenienced many Nepal bound passengers including Buddhist pilgrims who formed the bulk of the traffic from Sri Lanka to Nepal as well as tourists and business travelers.
Sri Lanka students attending Nepali universities were also inconvenienced, it said describing the resumption of direct flights as a `beneficial development.`
The Council noted that the resumption of these flights coincides with the abatement of hostilities and civil unrest in Nepal creating a more stable climate for economic activity. It also noted that the flights will promote regional tourism.
`This Council is happy that a concrete and a useful step has been taken to re-start direct flights between Sri Lanka and Nepal. As a result, we could confidently focus regeneration of travel, business and trade between our two countries,` the statement said.
