A four-member Advisory Committee, headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge, has been appointed, by the Ministry of Justice, to look into requests for reduction of sentences by prisoners serving life.
In May 2004, prisoners held a protest at the Welikada prisons in this regard.
Soon after the protest a committee was appointed to study the issue. They, in a report to the then Justice Minister John Seneviratne, recommended an advisory committee be appointed and the request of each prisoner serving life sentence be studied separately and recommendations made.
The Advisory Committee comprises retired Supreme Court Judge G. L. M. de Silva (President), former Commissioner General of Prisons, H. D. Dharmadasa, Senior Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Kamalini de Silva and Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Justice Mrs Piumanthi Peiris.
