Guys,
first i thought muraj boats might fire those, but reading biggles, is it possible to use the zlings to drop torpedos?
If the tiger birds could carry 4 small bombs, it is possible to carry a torpedo. We should guard the OPVs, FMVs, LCTs with AA guns and nets in the water.
Tigers might also try to drop a tin fish in to water dam,If they got them. Remember the WW2 Swordfish torpedo bombers?
Yes Its time we got some SAM units. And have at least two of our birds ready n armed to scramble 24/7! |

Rataperata,
Agree on why not shooting it down. But the million dollar question is, can SLAF shoot those down? If so with what?
I know hinds were planned to be upgraded to carry Air to Air missiles, but it was scrapped according to Mr. Mig29. Instead SLAF opted for AIM-92 for the Kfirs.
1. Has SLAF received the AIM92s?
2. Even if we have AIM-92s in stock are pilots trained for such a Air-to-Air role?
3. Is it possible to arm the Kfirs with AIM92 (which SLAF hasnt ever done before) in the middle of the night amid a blazing hangar and injured airmen?
These question in my opinion needs to be answered before considering as to why the ltte Zlings were let go back to Wanni. Plus as initial news reports suggest I doubt SLAF personnel had ANY idea as to what hit them. I am sure the 'battle plans' would have been to accomodate a possible ground assault similar to the 2001 attack.
All these - THE ADVANTAGE OF SURPRISE.
But is it really a surprise? didnt we hear about ltte planes flying over Palaly (although tamilnet lied about dropping bombs)? So why not take any effective action on such a possibility? that's the let down in my opinion.

Su33,
Well I saw a couple of articles say that they were detected 40 min away from target. But with the current fog-of-war, who knows?
Automatic defense system?? Hmmm doubt that. Or at least the 'automatic' part anyway.
I'd be more interested in finding out about the munitions used. I caught a short glimpse of the tiger photos... Looked like a Z143L with 2 x 2 FAB M62s on a rail (must be small calibre)... Thats interesting because those aren't IEDs... But yeah I really didn't get a good look. Still, somebody needs to ask where they got access to aviation bombs from. Anyway hope MiG-29C can confirm the details on the aircraft/bomb type.
BTW I don't think divebombing is that easy... The Germans found that some of their pilots crashed their Stukas when they blacked out under g-forces. They then had to modify the aircraft but thats another story. Question is whether they can do that in the middle of the jungle, and of course whether the aircraft has tolerances for that sort of thing, but thats one for MiG-29C.
Rata,
I think they are bombing Mannar now... or at least I saw some news to that effect. Haven't heard anything else, but really if the tigers had have hit something of value we'd probably have found out about it by now... the BBC et al would have been all over the show. And since the AFB is visible from the airport somebody would probably get the word out. |

Agree with nemesislk,
we need at least one Kfir armed and ready to go 24/7 like the USAF.
Also soldiers with MANPADS. Since we signed ACSA with USA, we might be able to get FIM-92A stingers easily. I think these are more effective than scrambling a Kfir in the middle of the night :-) |

Some Important questions:
1) How they avoided Military defense system, why they were not on?
2) How they avoided civilian radar (2 unidentified aircraft approached Colombo Int'l Airport)
3) Why we couldn't scramble fighters to respond soon enough to track them back to their airbase hideout.
This time LTTE failed to capitalize on surprise attack and we were lucky enough to save the Mig's and Kifir's and minimize the losses this time. Edited By - eskimo06 - 26 Mar 2007 14:02:32 GMT |

Thanks Saervek and rataperata.
im off for the day. good to hear SLAF ran sorties over Mannar. Phew! hee
normal service shall resume.
PS - I sincerely hope crack special forces could infiltrate wanni. this group should not be armed with trademark claymores. they should be armed with MANPADS :-) |

Mmm yes agree with you Su33 but i think Hind is the proper answer for AA role as it cann air born quickly than Kfir in this sort of situation .. if it can arm with proer tools it can be deadly and manpads is a must fro BIA from now on ,, not only BIA all the importaant plceses including presidant house
and Saervek
good observation.. it is nice to hear MIGs are on duty agin,, i like to see a good night mission from Migs ..

more fine tuning needed. a few practice runs over palaly should sort these out. shorter distance too.
rent-a-pilot outfit is out in full force taking out CIVILIaNS as usual.
lets see how the economy takes this. Thats the MAIn target!

| I heard that it took over half an hour to find and prepare pilots for KFir and Hind. Aperantley they were in sleep and woke up after explosions, but took too long to make it to their aircraft. Anyway, no attempts were made to be airborne (any intercepters) from Katunaike Base in the immediate aftermath. |
