Dear Mr.Devout ;-)
So its still a mystery eh? on what was fired at the Bell212? interesting indeed. If I am correct it was the same Bell pilots that first reported the control tower (or a similar structure) close to the airstrip.
I also read with interest on why USAF choppers are getting downed with increasing frequency. Wasn't it the same case you guys encountered in Somalia previously? So didn't you guys expect a similar situation in Iraq? Also what's the point of installing million dollars worth of counter measures when the bulk of insurgent attacks have been via unguided projectiles (eg - point five zeroes, RPG7s etc)?
Another question I have is, how did the tigers smuggle in heavy artillery guns? Aren't they too heavy for sea tiger tugs? SLA needed the Prima flour mill crane at Trincomalee to unload the 130mm guns when it first bought it. LTTE doesnt have such cranes? And at mid sea? Any idea Dear Mr. Mig29? Take care. One way of 'lightening' the load is to dismantle it .. 'reduce' to smaller/lighter units. If it is possible to separate the Gun Barrel from the Breech Block and Gun Mount .. and then have them transported as separate 'units' by sea .. handling/un-loading, and there-after 'cariage' along jungle tracks to an 'assembly point/s' may have made it 'practical'. (The LTTE has shown considerable ingenuity in their 'preparations', and may have pursued such a program - although it would have meant a lot of additional work in dis-assembly/assembly). Hello all.
first off, thankyou to all of you who contribute to this very readable and infinitely valuable thread. i strongly urge more sri lankans to take an active interest in defence matters, because as they say, 'war is politics by other means', so the defence theatre is not something we can choose to ignore. the more educated sri lankans are about the realities of this war, the better it will be for our armed men and women. As a rank amateur the feeling of information overload is a little daunting at times, but that hasn't put me off.
where to begin. well, my main interest is in fighter jets, so let me begin by asking what the designation MiG 23D means.
The MiG's with the SLAF are infact MiG-27D's. These aircraft are actually MiG-23BM (later MiG-27) Flogger-D aircraft upgraded to the M standard, Flogger-J - the soviet designation is MiG-27D Flogger-J. However, their commonly referred to as MiG-27M Flogger-J's.
Could someone (possibly MiG 29 himself) explain this a little more plainly for the benefit of novice enthusiasts like me. So first there was the 23BM, then 27D and finally 27M; each designation indicating a development of the previous model? Is there any real implication for the slaf if our planes are upgraded MiG 27Ds and not 'authentic' 27Ms?
Also was the 23BM primarily an air superiority fighter? That would make the MiG27 the ground attack variant correct?
Finally, could someone outline for me, in simple english (lol) the types of countermeasures installed on the slaf migs. secondly, what is their attack capability? what 'systems' are used to achieve this. if this question has already been answered, excuse my ignorance and point me to the relevant page.
ps. could someone define what a 'weapons system' is? |
