Eight-seater assembled at Ratmalana

Deccan Aviation is pleased to announce the arrival of its new aircraft to Sri Lanka. The GA8 Airvan arrived from the manufacturer s facility in Australia and will shortly be registered in Sri Lanka. The aircraft comes with a customized interior and avionics suite and will be the latest aircraft to take to the skies over Sri Lanka.

The aircraft can accommodate six passengers and a two-member crew. A spokesman for the company said the aircraft was assembled in Ratmalana after arriving in parts fuselage, wings, tail and landing gear etc...

'The arrival of the new aircraft marks a period of growth for Deccan Aviation, enabling the company to expand its market catchment to include passengers who would not normally fly by air and will augment Deccan s existing helicopter services throughout the countr,' the company said in a statement.

'The GA8 is set to transform the concept of travel around Sri Lanka for business or leisure. With upscale clients already served by Deccan s highly regarded helicopter service, the GA8 will greatly expand the airlines capabilities, and to maintain position as the market leading domestic airline in Sri Lanka,' it said.

In addition to flying passengers, Deccan will also offer other novel applications, such as whale watching by air, sports skydiving, photography and cargo missions, and has also developed seasonal applications for pilgrims to locations such as Katagarama,' Deccan Aviation said.

The GA 8 itself is a leader in its class of aircraft with the ability to land at all airports in the country including unpaved runways and beach strips. The aircraft comes with a state-of-the-art avionics package geared for IFR flights and even in the worst of weather conditions. A custom fitted three blade propeller offers significant lower noise footprint which is of great benefit when operating in environmentally sensitive areas such as national parks and wildlife reserves. With robust construction and powered by the reliable Lycoming family of engines, the Airvan offers an unbeatable costs per seat-mile, ensuring an economical, low maintenance and reliable operations platform. The GA 8 is manufactured by Gippsaero Australia, which is a subsidiary of Mahindra Aerospace India. Mahindra Aerospace is a part of the $US 7.1 billion Mahindra Group.

Releasing a statement, Terry Miles CEO of Gippsaero Pty Ltd, had this to say. 'We are very pleased to be part of the new and growing civil aviation market in Sri Lanka and with the delivery of our first Airvan we are confident that the owners of the aircraft will be delighted with their choice, as will the operator selected by the owners. We see great potential for our family of aircraft in Sri Lanka in the years ahead. As local corporations expand their reach to all parts of the country, the economics of owning an aircraft for corporate purposes becomes very good indeed.'

'We congratulate the Favourite Group of Sri Lanka and their operating partners for their choice of the GA8 aircraft, which is now part of the Mahindra Aerospace Group and look forward to supporting the success and growth of aviation in Sri Lanka' Arvind Mehra, Executive Director & CEO of Mahindra Aerospace.

Lion cub won t fly again

Curtain rings down on illustrious No 10 Squadron

The No 10 Fighter Squadron, consisting of Israeli-built Kfirs (the Hebrew term for Lion cub), considered the vanguard of the SLAF operations against the LTTE since 1996, is unlikely to fly again.

The SLAF grounded Kfirs on March 1, 2011 after a mid-air collision during a rehearsal destroyed two aircraft killing one pilot, while the other ejected. SLAF Commander Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrema ordered a high level inquiry into the accident. The SLAF headquarters is in the process of finalizing the report before it being handed over to Air Marshal Abeywickrema.

The No 10 Squadron will not join the planned fly past on May 27 over Galle Face to mark the second anniversary of Sri Lanka s military victory over the LTTE. The LTTE collapsed on the banks of the Nanthikadal lagoon on May 19 with the killing of its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

SLAF spokesman Wing Commander Andrew Wijesuriya said since the conclusion of the war in May 2009, the role of the service had changed.

Responding to a query by The Island, Wijesuriya asserted that the task of the multi-role Kfirs had diminished and the service would have to gradually phase out aircraft and equipment, which weren t required in the post-war era.

The Katunayake-based No 10 Squadron received the President s Colours during eelam war IV.

The SLAF established two other jet squadrons, namely No 12 comprising MiG 27s and No 07 comprising F7s to strengthen its offensive capability. All three Jet Squadrons operated from Katunayake, though the SLAF positioned a few aircraft at China Bay during the last phase of the offensive on the Vanni east front. At that time, the SLAF revealed that jets had been positioned at China Bay to thwart a possible attempt to evacuate the LTTE leadership holed up in Mullaitivu.

Wing Commander Wijesuriya emphasized that the SLAF would maintain assets needed to meet today s requirements, including maritime patrolling, surveillance and internal transport. According to him, there would be a full review of the service as part of the overall strategy.

The Kfirs carried out thousands of raids targeting the LTTE since 1996, and it achieved tremendous success during the August 2006-May 2009 campaign, which brought the LTTE to its knees.

At the beginning the No 10 Squadron consisted of six pilots, four engineering officers and 70 technicians and six aircraft of the C 2 variant. By year 2000, the SLAF acquired eight more Kfirs and one two-seater trainer, thereby increasing the aircraft inventory to 15 Kfirs, including two twin-seater trainers.

Another SLAF official told The Island that more Kfirs had been acquired subsequently with advanced avionics onboard.

The No 10 Squadron paired with the No 12 Squadron to carry out target killing of LTTE political wing leader and one-time Jaffna commander S. P. Thamilselvam in November 2007. The No 10 Squadron had been tasked with providing close air support, air interdiction, battlefield air interdiction, maritime air operations and air interception.

SLAF headquarters said that the No 10 Squadron had logged over 2,800 hours of operational flying and delivered over 3,500 tons of explosives on the LTTE.

Nediyavan arrested in Oslo

A Norwegian based LTTE leader Perinpanayagam Sivaparan known by his nom de guerre as Nediyawan has been arrested and was produced in an Oslo court on Wednesday and Thursday, the Norwegian media reported.

The Norway News website said that Nediyawan, a prominent figure and new leader of the LTTE is being questioned over LTTE activities in the Netherlands.

A Dutch judge and five Dutch Defence Attorneys are in Norway to interrogate the LTTE Leader Nediyavan, who is a resident of Norway.

In Norway the LTTE can operate freely, but in the USA, Australia and EU, they are considered to be a terrorist organization and are officially listed on the terrorists.

The Police Security Service (PST) does not want to make a comment on the secret case, but confirms to TV 2 that they assisted the Dutch police with the interrogation in the District Court.

The Dutch came to Norway because of an investigation of a terrorist financing case, where seven Tamil Tigers were arrested last year.

In April last year, Dutch police went to sixteen different addresses and made comprehensive apprehensions after the national security police (AIVD) had been investigating possible funding of the LTTE from the Netherlands for some time.

LTTE s 52-year old chief accountant and the alleged leader of the LTTE in Netherland (46) were among those arrested.

According to Dutch court documents, the LTTE in the Netherlands has an iron-grip on the Tamil minority in the country.

Those who do not support the LTTE with money are threatened with retaliations, it says in the Dutch court documents, according to NRC Handelsblad.

Secretary of State P l L nseth in the Ministry of Justice in Norway told TV2 that he does not believe other countries perceive Norway as a safe haven for terrorists.

He confirms that he knew about the Dutch case and the interrogation in the Oslo Court District, Norway News reported.
