Happy Independence day guys!
Saervek,
wow, I really didn't think along those lines for ditching the 23mm canon. Thanks!
I also came across this site
http://www.secinfo.com/dsvrp.94u8.htm
and it says
'As of July 31, 1996, the Company had three PCFs (Patrol Craft Fast) under construction for the government of Sri Lanka and had outstanding options from such customer for three additional PCFs.'
The site is USA's Halter Marine, a subsidiary of Friede Goldman Halter. Any idea what the PCFs were? Are those the FGBs SLN are using now? I thought they were Chinese origin? Anyone? Edited By - Su33 - 4 Feb 2007 09:27:12 GMT |

SenaM & Eksath
Good thinking guys... I came to a similar conclusion once MiG-29C said the SLAF wanted to add to their training capabilities. Most likely as SenaM says they need a 2-man crew. What I found odd about it was the fact that the SLAF hasn't really shown any interest in adding to its F-7 fleet before... keeping what they have, sure, but they haven't purchased any new craft after the first order have they? I guess though that since we are purchasing from Pakistan our options on which aircraft to purchase are limited... Another thing is the fact that the SLAF has been adding to its training capability in otherways as well, since they took delivery of another set of K-8s last year, unless of course they want to train pilots on actual ground strike missions... Speaking of which the article that this thread is on speaks of two men in the plane that went out of control... implying it was a TC2... Which means the SLAF do use those on combat sorties. What do you guys think?
Su33,
Umm I think it's talking about the Mk. V patrol boats or Pegasus-class... You'll find the info you want here;

As to why SLAF has not considered increasing their F7 strength .. As you know, the F7 is a Chinese 'copy' (or up-date) of the Mig 21. Believe, it is adapted for the 'ground attack' role, but the associated equipment may not have the accuracy of similar 'packages' found in the the Kfir and the Mig-27. Apart from accuracy, there may be other problems like a requirement for more maintenance hours to keep them 'flying', equipment un-reliability (short lives) etc. Altogether I believe the Mig-27 is a much better aircraft for the 'Ground Attack' role - bigger pay-load, higher accuracy in delivery etc.
(Note: The Russians produced the Mig-23 first, as an 'improvement' over the Mig-21 .. as a long-range, air-superiority/interceptor type a'cft. Later, they adapted the Mig-23 for precision 'ground attack', and called it the Mig-27. So, the SLAF trainer a'cft is a Mig-23T, and the rest of the fleet, Mig-27s. The Mig-27 is still an 'economy' machine (only one engine), unlike something like the US F-4 Phantom .. and dis-advantaged in an 'engine-out' situation). Edited By - SenaM - 4 Feb 2007 21:53:20 GMT |

Hello everyone,
This is a neat website that I came across, unfortunately I don't speak Russian but the pictures are great! They have pictures of almost all the types of vessels with the SLN as well as the Sea Tigers. http://balancer.ru/forum/punbb/viewtopic.php?id=53037&p=1 |

Saervek ,
ThinKing,
I had prepared a rather detailed answer, but the rubbishy software they are using for the forum has taken exception to some word in there completely incorrectly and I really can't be bothered retyping that stuff, so concisely;
Yes I know. It can be a real pain when it happens after writting along reply! :D
Thanks anyway. |

Respect,
Mr. Mig29c is very well aware of this fact. He has mentioned this throughtout this thread that his entire posts are being hijacked at times :-)
lol at thinking's comment on Mr. Mig29 being an unofficial reporter heehhee :-)
---
Panzer,
nice find. An entire thread on our Navy by Russians? And 5 pages too? Good thing they have to use English to name whats in the pics :-)
---
Anyways guys do you have any idea who flew the Migs yesterday? Was it our own Lankan pilots? Or were they mercenaries? Even though they flew I have a hunch they may not be combat ready yet.
Perhaps Mr. Mig29 could answer this :-) Edited By - Su33 - 5 Feb 2007 13:59:49 GMT |

SenaM and Eksath,
I am asking this question from the two of you since you seem to have strong aircraft backgrounds, but anyone else can answer also.
Its not exactly a military hardware related question, but here goes;
Regarding structural repairs (minor) on aircraft its common practice I assume to refer to the structural manuals on the particular aircraft.
I believe this is the case with Boeing and Airbus type of aircraft
Is this the same procedure for Russian or Chinese built models?
Are there manuals, preferably written in english that you follow, or is the repair done simply to FAR or JAR standards?
Note: My question is regarding minor structural repairs and not something that would require a large airframe overhaul Edited By - snake2 - 5 Feb 2007 12:43:31 GMT |
