Mr. Mig29C,
Don't worry sir.. I am make very sure with all my postings that I don't reveal anything that will genuinely comprise your countries national security :o)
Thank you for your reply, I did not mean to make reference to you in particular, that was not my intention.
I apologize if there was a misunderstanding due to that.
My concern was regrading the highly technical information discussed by the knowledgeble members on this thread, as a whole.
I would like to thank you once again for using your judgment and discretion, your professionalism and also for taking the time to let us share your wisdom |

Dear Mr. Mig29,
Thanks for clarifying the MI24 questions I posed. So the PAF FT7 is not the mystery aircraft? mmmmmmmmmm
Of course I understand that some info needs to be left out for the betterment of our security establishment. Overall it seems SLAF is in good hands at the moment. :-)
In total contrast however, the SLN seems to be at the bottom of the 'to-do' list. No matter whether we buy heavy or extra heavy FACs or whatever, the threats posed by the human torpedoes could be easily challenged by using the 30mm canons I think. Not only it is more destructive but they also come with a longer range am I right guys?
I also recall the American Bushmaster canon being offered to SLN. and it was said it was far more superior than the Oerlikon (is this Israeli?). Is the bushmaster still open to SLN Mr. Mig29? If so what's the holding SLN back? Its just a waste of lives and equipment :-(
This maybe a bit way off point, but why can't we place sea mines close to Sea tiger bases? Anyone?
I would like to thank you once again for using your judgment and discretion, your professionalism and also for taking the time to let us share your wisdom
Here's a big thankyou from me as well! :-) Edited By - Su33 - 2 Feb 2007 13:14:58 GMT |

Mig 29-C;
It is a misunderstanding. I never said my friend is of Sri Lankan origin.He is a Ukranian of Russian origin. He once visited Sri Lanka some time ago when they were delivering BMP tanks by An124 transporter.That's his only Lankan connection. |

MiG-29C,
I will answer you question next week..
Not a problem, and have a nice weekend!
P.S.
I completely forgot about your post on the C-130. Thanks for the info. I have a couple of additional questions, firstly, a lot of publications mention the purchase of 3 C-130Ks, but in the end the SLAF only took delivery of 2 correct? Any idea on why the discrepancy exists? Secondly, the SLAF passed the overhaul project to PAC Kamra (or at least they asked for a technical team), and I know they have some overhaul capabilities there (PAC), but how much are they going to do there, and how much will they source to you guys in the US? I assume that the T56-A-15s have to come from the US... Also is it possible to opt for the AE2100 used on the J instead? There was also supposed to be a request for an additional aircraft from US surplus... can you comment if this is so/likely to go through? Thanks again, and catch you next week.

Apologies for butting in, but GreyFox posted this rather nice link on SLN upgrades (to IPCs though) a while back.
http://www.dailynews.lk/2006/12/08/fea03.asp
BTW, Oerlikon-Contraves is a Swiss firm, but is a division of Rheinmetall A.G. (German). I think you'll also find that (besides the various allegations of corruption) money and logistics are the problems with upgrading FACs... Keep in mind that once you replace the 20/23mm cannon, what do you do with them? Dispose of them? Fit them on the IPCs (which would probably mean buying more Typhoon mounts)? Sell them? It all costs money... Likewise you'd have to dispose of existing stocks of 20/23mm ammo... Also smaller cannons aren't all bad.. they can achieve a higher RoF, which can be important dependent on fire control... Also keep in mind that on-board ammo stowage tends to decrease as shells become larger... There are also contractual problems where Rafael has locked us into dealing with them on upgrades/changes to the Typhoon (see the statement by Marapana). |

BTW, while speaking of the SLN, has anyone noticed the similarities between an SLN IPC and these tiger boats?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Sea_Tiger_Colonel_Soosai.JPG
(Look beyond the corpulent soosai)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Sea_Tiger_Fast_Attack_boat.jpg
They certainly aren't identical, and SLN IPCs use waterjets rather than outboards but there is enough of a similarity to make you wonder if they didn't reverse engineer an IPC...
CannonFodder,
Was this the delivery back in the 90s which I think they canceled half way through because the delivered IFVs didn't work properly? There was also supposed to have been a delivery of BMP-3s later on... but no one seems to agree on the precise number of BMP-1/2/3 that the SLA took delivery of... Has your friend given you any details on that transfer? |

Saervek,
This is nothing related to the current topic, but those pics in Wiki are taken by one 'Isak Berntsen'. Did a quick google search and seems like this guy is a officer in the Royal Norwegian Navy. Now the question is what was he doing in Mullaitivu? I dont think he was a member of SLMM, but looks like SLMM knew he was there (or they took him to Mullaitivu). Any Idea? |

Reason for choosing the FT-7PG (trainer airframe) probably has to do with the fact that the task it is intended to perform is strictly a 2-man job. (This is obviously a PAF 'inspired' conversion of the F7 a'cft .. to meet their needs. They may have recommended it to us, after studying our 'operational' needs).
If the a'cft is intended for low-level recce and 'laser-painting' targets .. a 2nd operator will be very useful to 'manage' the associated equipment. (We do not know the degree of sophistication of the 'auto' mode systems on board .. the pilot may have plenty 'to do' flying, and maintaining his 'track'). Saevek,
Also, the SLAF has almost 15 years of operational experience with the F-7 airframe. All # 10 squadron pilots had their operational jet conversion on these prior to the induction of the K-8s. They also have a FT-7 on inventory for dual instruction. Am sure this familiarity and delivery from a friendly reliable source had something to do with it too.
Mig29C,
Thanks fro the updates! Don' t you think the #2 Squadron needs some equipment -fast. They seemed to be stretched quite thin. Heavy capability is low..very low as you pointed out. They are unsung heros working night and day doing an unglamorous job. |

Once again Thanks Mig29C , mate your doing a wonderful job ..
And thanks for the reply for my Q?s and I knew that mannar Attack was not at it best.. thanks froth confirmation..
Now got couple of Q ?s
1 .Its nearly 2 months after the arrival. But why we still didn?t see any use of the new Mig 27?s ? specially in the Eastern theater , It looks they have opted to use Mi24s,instead.
2. When it come to attack or destroy military establishment, lay deep in the jungle with less or no civilians exist (you know where I am talking about) , SLAF got a luxury to use bombs likes of .. fuel-air explosive S-8D and AT-6A Shtrum-9210.. is this a good ploy ??,, and which SLAF air craft can do this job properly ?? I know Mig27M will but I think Mi24 and 35 both capable of carrying these bombs am I correct??
3. FT-7PG fighter .. personally I hate ?fishbed? air frame. as you said its so vintage type.. and hope this is not the mystery air craft as you mention, cause if that the case its a total disappointment. And I also think that its mainly for high speed/low-level photo reconnaissance . But what will happened to those 2 ?Beach kings? grounded .. any idea when they gona fly again? ??
That?s it for now.. will be back with more Qs.. later .. |

ThinKing,
I had prepared a rather detailed answer, but the rubbishy software they are using for the forum has taken exception to some word in there completely incorrectly and I really can't be bothered retyping that stuff, so concisely;
Isak Berntsen seems to be part of the SLMM or at least knows the SLMM monitor Ulf Larsen, who uploaded the photos. There are also more photos on wikipedia, which I linked when I tried to post last time before the forum rejected it, you could try searching for them...
On a different topic; I found this site;
http://www.svik.org/norwaylaw.htm
There is also an interesting video on that page about an ltte visit to a Norwegian base (RENA).
Apologies again for the brevity, but blame the software, not me.
SenaM & Eksath,
Good ideas guys... will get back to you soon. |
