(admittedly .303 calbre, but still effective against enemy troops in the 'open')
How often do you think that the SLA will encounter a battalion or even a company size frontal attack by the LTTE? the LTTE success has been to out maneuver the SLA by multiple simultaneous small unit actions and exploit chinks in the armor to penetrate the defensive line. They are more vulnerable to a gunship attack because a gunship is more maneuverable hence able to individually track targets without the need for forward air control.
In a'open' attack the SLAF has enough weapons already. There more than a dozen Mi-24/35s on inventory. With over 10 years of service in the SLAF, they are well understood. Also, they are stationed close to the theaters of operation. Why would you need to introduce a new type? if anything, their number should be increased. my 02 cents. |

Hello Chaps,
Good to see you all still on the up and up. I must say to all of you to to stay focused on tactics... All the weapons are of no use if you do not know how to keep the enemy off balance all the time.
It seems you fellows have few planes and little dough. To win you must have tactics hit 'em in different places at all the time. Keep 'em off balance you know.
As you chaps do not have 200 Mosquitoes to swarm all over, use every plane you have. I used to fly out of China Bay, and there is no reason why the Pucaras cannot help patrol the seas, showing up in places when the enemy is not expecting it. Fly low and shot small LTTE assets. It also possible to the same thing over ground.
Look here, they are using the old Claymore to do similar damage. How many of your boys go south every day to claymores? 2 or 3?
Well you knock of more of them every day with Pucara raids. Why let these panes sit in the hanger? Use them. Heck, fix every plane you have with a good gun or two and gave go over soft areas. Let me tell you lads, the Israeli's used the ruddy Mosquitoes into the 1960s. They used every plane they had when their airforce was weak.
Agh! If only I was young enough to get a squadron of Mosquitoes going. 400mph with four nose guns and we would have hurt them every day.
Cheerio!

Snake2,
I suppose Eksath's answer is more than enough. However, until your link which shows that the Pucara is still operational with the Argentine AF I had no idea! I honestly thought they scrapped the pucara back in the 80s after the falklands debacle.
I also have another question to Mig29 since he seems to be fluent with American weaponry particularly those of Raytheon. I know SLA uses the Raytheon AN/TPQ 36 radar plots for counter battery fire. Any idea how they work? Anyone?
I will also post my previous question as well, just in case Mr. Mig29 misses it
Does the Mi24/35 enjoy the functions of MTI - Moving Target Indication. Does its canon/rockets automatically lock onto targets?
Thanks much! (If anyone wants to beat MIg29, please feel welcome to do so :-)) Edited By - Su33 - 11 Jan 2007 11:29:12 GMT |

SU33,
hey, good to see you back :) I think Fire finder systems use radio or sound waves to track Enemy Battery location.. check here for more details :http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/an-tpq-36.htm
about Mi24/35, check this out : http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/russia/mi-24-specs.htm and by the way do you know how many mi35s (Export variants) we got?
Cheers!

Dinuk, or is it Asela? (whatever :-P)
Thanks for the links. I know the firefinder measures the trajectory ark and plots it back to the site of origin aka the launcher using radar. But the link doesn't exactly explain it. :(
Same with the MI24 link. Its all technical data. Doesn't say whether it has MTI functions.
In answer to your question - SLAF have 5 MI35ps. See you once Mig29 comes back :-) |

Hello Everyone,
I don?t think that the Pucaras are the solution for us, effectiveness aside, simply because they are at the very end of their life cycles. However, to be fair to the Pucars, except for a couple all the others were destroyed on the tarmac, and not in aerial combat. I think that we, as a nation, should concentrate on having exceptionally strong armed forces well in to the future, not just to defeat the LTTE. We will always have one threat or the other due to our strategic location and internal volatility. Once someone asked Mig-29 as to what aircraft we should get and he suggested the JF-17, which will be available in late 2008. |

Panzer,
I agree with your line of thinking but your facts need some work. I posted on the actual event surrounding the 4 airframes previously. Please check page # 34
Just an FYI to you
