Girl air-pilots in the national air-line .. that's a good, progressive step. Soon enough .. when the present restrictions on flight-training are relaxed .. we may have schools taking students thro' the full spectrum .. even aerobatics. In days to come, we may have young women taking to the skies, and going-on to produce an aerobatic pilot of the calibre of Patti Wagstaff (of USA) .. who has won the Women's International Aerobatic Prize, for the past two years, as I believe. Some-where along that way, 'doors' will open for girls in Sri Lanka to join the air force as GD Cadets, and train for military flying duties.

We Sri Lankans have produced some excellent pilots .. as good as found any-where in the world. At RAF College Cranwell - premier air-cadet training college - officer cadets from our air force have topped the list, and won prizes for airman-ship, aerobatics etc. Some of them re- joining for service in the Royal Air Force have earned high praise for their skill, courage and commitment to duty.

Su33:

Met a Sri Lankan young lady in Ohio sometime ago, graduating with degree in commercial aviation in 2003 or 2004. If I remember right, she returned home to work for the national carrier.

First of all, most of today's corvettes and Frigates can't hit around 40kts. Most have a maximum speed between 29kts-35kts. Even older models like the soviet Koni class frigates can hit only about 30kts and no more. So I don't understand how you came to the 40kts 'dash'.

I think that a decently armed OPV doesn't need a high speed dash to fight a fleet of LTTE boats. Like I said before even if we go ahead and buy corvettes and Frigates we will still end up using the cannons in all of the sea battle anyway. In high speed naval engagements 1 minute is an eternity. A 76mm cannon has a effective range of upto 16km. And besides, the OPVs will we patroling mostly the blue waters which the LTTE craft don't have the endurance to reach.

Secondly the fearless class vessel can hit a maximum of 36kts. For example if we make a similar sized vessel at home, minus the missiles systems and torpedo systems but with better maritime surveillance equipment installations instead, the final weight of the ship will be about the same. See what I mean?

I do agree with you that CDL is currently too busy with international orders to build ships for our navy.

It?s good to see that more and women involvement in SL military. Women are even good for intel gathering and DPU operations, like LTTE use women for high profile targets.

I think the navy can aquire some these systems....MLRS systems mounted on dvoras can be effective....this particular type has 2 compatible warheads, an incendiary warhead and a fragmentation warhead...this would be a good weapon specially if our boats get outnumbered....but the minimum range of the weapon is 800 metres....which might make it useless in close range combat........but if we can ID the LTTE boats early...this Ogon system might come in handy.

Splav is the same company that builds the reputed uragon, smerch and grad MBRL systems....

This Ogon system is too heavy(even the MC-227 version) to be fitted in a 25m long Dvora. It will slow done the FAC.

On the ther hand this sytem would be very good for an OPV. It will be cheaper to use than missiles and can counter an advancing group of LTTE boats.

Corvettes are also pretty expensive to operate compared to OPVs.

The site says it is used in river and assault boats, which compared with the dvora is smaller. Especially the Sheldag version of our dvora is pretty large. So i don't think it will have a huge decrease in movement. However it is important that if we fit this system it should be in parallel with the typhoon system that is already on our FACs. In that aspect it would be a bit too heave indeed. Also the MLRS is useless for close range combat. As you said the MLRS fitted in an OPV would be very very useful. Even for offshore bombardment. This would come in very handy if the Navy is to assist in securing a beach for an amphibious assault. Specially the incendiary warhead would have an demoralizing effect on the LTTE.
