Guys,

What the Tigers must do is buying the Indian-Russian Missile Brahmos and put a nuclear head in front of it and target Colombo.

Eelam will be gained by force.

It's cheaper than buy millions of arms. It will be easier and cleaner.

There were a few flight delays and a lot of inconvenienced caused to passengers due to this incident and nothing was reported over the media regarding this. SriLanka should have an alternative plans to overcome these.

Dear Mr.Kural

That is quite a cataclysmic option your advocating there .. you do realise that the nuclear fall out will kill every man woman and child in srilanka including civilians in the areas earmarked as the future tamil eelam state .. do you hate the Sinhalese that much that you would destroy your own people?

Dear Mr BitterTruth,

From that list only 3 were ground attack aircraft.. in addition the Kfir aircraft destroyed and damaged were Kfir C.7s and not Kfir C.2s as accorded in this document.. this document was initially prepared in 2001, the edition you have highlighted in your link is an addendum to that initial document. Therefore some of the entries are not completely accurate.

Here is the actual damage to SLAF ground attack aircraft:

Kfir C.7 CF-722 and C.7 CF-723 destroyed while on the tarmac in the parkway .. Kfir C.7 CF-725 and CF-721 which were inside the hanger were damaged in the attack but are now both back in full operational service.

MiG-27M CF-732 destroyed while on the tarmac in the parkway .. Mig-27M CF-734 which was inside the hanger and damaged in the attack but was repaired .. subsequently CF-734 was lost in june 2004 due to an engine failure.

Therefore the actual losses to SLAF ground attack aircraft from the attack was:

2 x Kfirs from a fleet of 11 (18% loss of fleet strength)
1 x Mig-27M from a fleet of 6 (17% loss of fleet strength)

Fortunately for the SLAF the LTTE has already played this card .. suffice to say a similar attack the second time round will be considerably harder since the element of surprise is no longer in the LTTEs favour.

Mig-29C thanks for the information. Do you know the type of anti-aircraft missiles shown in the movie 'Behind the Enemy Lines' if you have watched it? :-)

Dear Mr.Bittertruth,

From what I can remember they were either SA - 8 Gecko's or SA-9 Gaskin's.. the launch vehicle for both systems look very similar, and in the movie .. again from what I can remember.. the details of the truck were masked so its difficult to make a definitive identification.

The armoured vehicle used for the SA-8 is 6-wheeled, whilst the SA-9 is 4-wheeled

However the SA-8 and SA-9 are both mobile vehicle based systems.. these systems are not available on the black market.

Mig29-c, why do you think SLAF hasn't used there Mig's yet? If i'm not wrong...i remember you writing into this forum once about a night attack the Migs took on with great success sometime ago...
How come the Migs being superior to kfirs but yet to see action...at least no news about them in the public domain.
A question for you :0) Since people are talking about euro fighters and f-16's...what do you think in your opinion will be the best ground attack aircraft for SLAF if and when they go for an upgrade :) With my few copies of Janes Defence and the Journal magazines...i've heard so many good things about russian fighters :) they tend to lack endurance and reliability some say... :)
I remember reading the interview of the russian pilot on a Sukhoi that shot down the korean airliner...must be tough to be a combat pilot....a good combat pilot

Dear Mr. Dauntless,

The 3 remaining SLAF Mig-27Ms (CF737, CF735, CF731) from what I was told were grounded pending intermediate maintence level clearance .. the SLAF is waiting for spares to be ordered from the Ukraine because India, the nearest Mig-27M operator in the region has been reluctant to provide the necessary items due to the present climate in tamil nadu.

However these spares are on their way, the aircraft should be cleared for combat operations in a month or two.

The main aim of the SLAF in the future should be to minimise the different types of aircraft used .. the current mix of Kfir C2/C7s, Mig-27M and F-7s is a maintenance nightmare for such a small air arm .. they should aim to consolidate on one specific variant ..

My advice .. which infact has already been enacted :o) .. the SLAF should acquire the Pakistani/Chinese JF-17 Thunder .. this aircraft should be available for export in 2008 .. it's a very capable platform and ideal for the SLAF considering capability and budget.

Dear Mr.Dauntless,

I will tell you on a later date why the JF-17 is the best solution to the SLAF future air offensive and defensive needs .. this single aircraft will replace the Kfir C2/C7 and F7 .. personally I would stick with the remaining Mig-27Ms, but get upgrades to its offensive air systems.
