Panzer,
Do you have any idea if a Vulcan type (Gatling gun) cannon has/is being used by SLN? Just curious, I would assume with fast and maneuvarable enemy boats, a high rate of fire would be a better option than larger calibre? Just something I was interested to find out about.
Thanks

Hello Snake2,

As far as I know SLN does not employ Vulcan type armaments, or if they do, not more than a few units.

There are two schools of thought: the Americans followed the higher rate of fire lower caliber option, and the Russians and Europeans followed the higher caliber lower rate of fire option.

If you are engaging a fast moving enemy craft over a distance of more than a 1000 yards a heavier caliber armament may be more effective, especially if the suicide craft are armour plated. Another drawback of a Vulcan type gun is that the barrel requires over .5 seconds to reach optimum rate of fire. Doesn't sound like a lot, but might be crucial in close quarter encounters.

Does anyone know if SLN opted for the Bofors 70 mm package when they refurbished the 'Courageous.'

These studies found that the craft had very poor directional stability and were easily flipped over when caught in the wake of a larger boat. Therefore as possible tactic, SLN FAC could try capturing the homicide craft in its wake and zig-zagging to generate a considerably turbulent wake to overturn the approaching homicide craft.

Typically when a suicide boat is launched there are a few more sea tiger vessels giving cover (firing their guns). infact the sea tigers engage the SLN and only then do they launch the suicide tiger craft. although in theory it would work as suggested as the boat is very small (not the Sea tigers vessels) the SLn at this point is in retreat or busy firing and dont have ttime to carry out this suggested manoeuvre

especially if the suicide craft are armour plated.

typically they are not.

MIG-29c

Lanka started to make their own UAVs.

'The manufacture of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and mine blockers by the local engineers in the newly set up Research and Development Unit are among them, and this concept was also put into practice on the directive of the President as he wanted to give the local experts pride of place.'

If it works, that will put SL one step away from a home grown cruise missile.

Last I heard a MIG-27 costs about $2 million, a Kfir costs about $6 million. This is what I heard not sure if its true.

I doubt Lanka brought any Su-27 or SU-30, you are right they do cost about $35-$40 million per jet. Too expensive for lanka, but its an awesome jet with a 8000kg weapon payload. Expectional air superiority fighter, on par with the F-16s.
