Mr. Eelanathan

MIG29C, Does SLN currently use many submarines? We have not heard about their usage!

The SLN does not have a submarine capability as far as I know .. but they do have a capable sonar capability.

Mr. Dishan

i've also wondered recentlty given that ltte movements in the past to tamilnadu through the ocean on small boats have been many... does this still happen or do the sln or indian navy keep an eye on those movements to prevent any arms smuggling??

The Indian coast guard regularly patrols the relevant stretches of water near Tamil Nadu, in addition to almost daily IAF Searcher II flights and regular flights of Dornier 228 Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft over the stretch of sea linking India to the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Although the Indian establishment is reluctant to provide material support overtly, the exchange of intelligence has been improved considerably ..

For illegal arms procured in the east asian markets of (Cambodia/Myanmar/Thailand/Indonesia) LTTE arms ships all transit through the uninhabited islands of the Andamans and Nicobar, before they head towards the east coast of Sri Lanka. The stretch is now heavily patrolled by the Indian Air Force.

Mr. LankaTileke

why did SLAF loose many Mi24s , dont they have any missile defense systems or any ati- missile systems?

By the year 2000 Only a handful of SLAF Mi-35P and Mi-24V Hind helicopters were equipped with 'IAI/Elta - Flight Guard' systems. This is compared to SLAF Mi-17's which had Flight Guards installed since around 1997. The remaining Mi-24V and Mi-35P aircraft still used the standard defensive aid suite fitted on all Mi-24s which consisted of:

3 x Sirena-3M radar warning antennae, one on each side of front fuselage and one on the trailing-edge of tail rotor pylon.

1 x Infra-red jammer (Hot Brick) in a 'flower pot' container above forward end of tailboom.

1 x ASO-2V flare dispensing unit under the tailboom forward of tailskid assembly on the Mi-24V. The Mi-35P had two ASO-2V units on the rear fuselage.

The 'Sirena-3M' warning system functioned independently to the 'Hot Brick' jammer and the 'ASO-2V' flare dispensers - the three sub-systems were not wired to work in conjunction as an automatic defensive system. For the self protection system to work it relied on the Pilot activating the flare dispensers and the 'Hot Brick' jammer manually when notified of a threat by the 'Sirena-3M' warning system.

It is a well know fact that the 'Sirena-3M' warning system has a lot of deficiencies - false warnings, delayed reaction warnings. Coupled with delayed response times because of its manual opeartion, accounted for all SLAF Mi-24 losses. The 'Hot Brick' jammer is a very capable system, however it has a poor in-service record due to poor reliability.

This changed however with the introduction of 'IAI/Elta's - Flight Guard' system.

This was demonstrated in the incident on the 23rd of October 2000 when two SLAF Hinds engaged Sea Tiger 'Muraj' boats in Trincomalee. CH613 and CH629 (both Mi-24V) were involved in the attack.

CH613 was shot down because it used the standard 'Sirena-3M' system and the pilot was late in launching his countermeasures. CH629 survived because it was using the 'IAI/Elta' system which successfully defeated the 2 missiles fired at it.

Now all Mi-24V, Mi-24P and Mi-35P Hinds in the SLAF use the 'IAI/Elta - Flight Guard' system

Hope this answers your question..

Hi Mig29C

I'm sure a lot of us have heard many stories about the legendary 'bunker-busters'.

How exactly do these bombs achieve the goal of penetrating reinforced concrete, generally having at least a couple of feet in thickness ?

Also, is there such a thing as a 'fuel cell' bomb ? What is it ?

Thanks for your insights.
