SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the enthusiastic `Crocodile Hunter` who enthralled audiences around the world with his wildlife adventures, died Monday morning after being stung by a stingray while shooting a TV program off Australia`s north coast.

Media reports say Irwin was snorkeling at Batt Reef, a part of the Great Barrier Reef about 9 miles (about 15 kilometers) from the town of Port Douglas, when the incident happened.

Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest, according to Cairns police sources.

Australia Prime Minister John Howard said he was `shocked and distressed at Steve Irwin`s sudden, untimely and freakish death,` according to AP. `It`s a huge loss to Australia.`

Mr.Brown i thought it was mentioned here somewhere that only news items related to Sri Lanka are posted on this website after moderation. Just wondering as to what the requirements are thats all.

---

I am saddened by the death of this man (by a stingray at that) because i am a fan of his shows since the early 90's. May he rest in peace.

No such thing is mentioned anywhere in LNP. Steve Irwin is a world icon.

Mr. Brown:

Nothing like that is mentioned anywhere. Steve Irwin is a world icon.

I don't agree with you that Mr. Steve is a world celebrity, that all. Nelson Mandela is an icon!

Mr.Brown,

This is the notification that is displayed when users submit articles that i saw : 'Please note that articles will be published only if they directly relate to current news events in Sri Lanka.'

I was just curious as to whether you would have published articles relating to other world events because i myself was considering a submission about Steve Irwin's death but then i figured you may not publish it since it's not related to Sri Lanka. Then i saw this article and wondered what the requirements are, thats all.

You got me. For news submissions it makes sence to imply a limitation. This article is not a submission.

Thanks
