President Mahinda Rajapakse Saturday countermanded a ministerial move to replace Daily News Editor Bandula Jayasekera.
A furious Rajapakse directed Jayasekera to carry on his work regardless Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa`s decision to replace him with Jayatillake de Silva, a former editor of the Sunday Observer.
Well informed sources said that Rajapakse was particularly angry over Yapa`s move made the day before his arrival from London. Yapa was not available for comment.
The Media Minister Saturday said that Jayasekera is being replaced `for managerial reasons. There are several reasons for the decision. The main reason is that circulation has been going down.` While agreeing that Jayasekera`s appointment was political, Yapa said, `I am the Minister and I have to manage the place properly.
Yapa`s move came against the backdrop of a running battle between Jayasekera and an influential Lake House hotshot described as the minister`s stooge. They clashed over a range of issues, an insider said. According to him, Yapa was desperately trying to save his face amidst speculation that he would be a casualty in the event of the much talked about cabinet reshuffle.
The Island learns that this was the latest setback suffered by Yapa who is not happy over the recent appointment of Minister Keheliya Rambukwelle as the government spokesperson on security affairs.

Poor minister, Yapa Priyadarshana will have to keep his mouth shut on this issue. I think Yapa could have consulted MR before taking a decisioon to replaced Bandula Jayasekara as he is close to MR. If somebody over powers his (Yapa's) correct decisions he should think of handing over his resignation from his portfolio. Unfortunately in Sri lanka politics this is not a practice.
