If Neelan Thiruchelvam represented the 'middle-ground' - and that was anathema to Prabha, you can see why he wanted Neelan 'done away' with. If CBK really believed in the program for devolution as contained within the Set of Proposals put together by Neelan, and GL Pieris, she should have gone on with a military program, as the one we see currently. She was sufficiently tough-minded to give leader-ship to a military offensive to bring about a situation where the kind of power-devolution she was proposing could be actioned - she was just not fortunate, enough. (With perhaps one qualification - she is probably 'too full' of her own self-importance - which interferes with see-ing things, clearly).
There is a certain unique way in how things 'gell' - I would just say, MR was more fortunate than anything else that things 'fell into place' nicely for him, militarily - in the current situation. He was un-certain, at the beginning, however, now see-ing the build-up of momentum is more relaxed, more confident. In order to come up with a 'solution' to this problem between the Sinhalese and the Tamils (with Muslims on the periphery), there has to be a political settlement - he would know that, very clearly. And I do believe, the Set of Proposals for Power Devolution, earlier advanced by CBK (compiled/drawn up by Neelan, and GL Pieris), will be the basis of this settlement. I can see GL joining MR's team at the right time .. Edited By - SenaM - 3 Sep 2006 23:40:41 GMT |

Dear Nirupam,
Copy to Dada555 and Revy as well,
Thanks Nirupam for your views about Neelan. You are absolutely right, his proposals by no means were one sided. That means he was very critical about the govt as well as the LTTE. I am not a scholar to understand his level of thinking but knowing him as well as I do, I had complete faith in his ability to make necessary changes to the constitution which would not favour any party.
Nirupam, if Chandrika B tried her cunningness on Neelan, she would have failed miserably. Neelan is way way way too intelligent to fall for any fast one by any body.
He was keen on making changes at higher level rather than shouting slogans in the parliament. That is the difference between Neelan and the likes of Mr. Raviraj and mr. Maheswaran (who shouts and then shamelessly goes behind the UNP hierarchy and apologises). Neelan wanted a change at the top i.e. constitution. In his own words 'it will present a solution that will stand the test of time'.
However he was not playing to the tune of anybody. As much as he was against Sinhala nationalism, he was against LTTE tactics and sectorian attitude. I think that is what cost him his life. Edited By - sk63 - 3 Sep 2006 23:44:26 GMT |

Whats happening in sampoor? Has SLA given up?
Dada555, according to this latest AFP news piece yes:
Military officials said Sunday that a ground offensive to capture a rebel artillery position at Sampur 10 kilometres (six miles) away that targetted the port complex had been called off because of stiff rebel resistance.

I met someone from Velanai, an islet close to Jaffna, he said his house was forcibly occupied by EPDP thugs, when LTTE recently moved there all these thugs havevanished from there and his relations have moved back to their houses. This is a reliable information from someone who comes from there.
LOL typical behaviour of these GoSL token Tamils, they are only brave when killing sleeping toddlers and their unarmed parents. |

Dunno where you get your '10km' from (from TrumpetNet?)
That was in that AFP news piece in the statement from the SLA.
As for the reverse on the APC, looks like two of them couldn't engage it fast enough yesterday, they were burning real good. |

| Totally agree with PrettyKfir. However the innocent civilians should not be made to suffer. |
