Yes, Neelan Thiruchelvam was a great scholar. Neelan, Radhika Coomaraswamy and Godfrey Goonatileke did a lot at Marga Institute. He could have been one of the great Tamil leaders if he was given proper support.
Why was he killed? May be because he did not resort to terrorism. He was opposing conflict but he resorted to pen and his refined negotiating skills instead of a gun. |

Neelan Thiruchelvam was the most brilliant lawyer except perhaps GGP that Sri Lanka has seen. He was the son of Mr Thiruchelvam, attorney general and Punitham, president of red Cross. He studied at Royal, Colombo uni, and Harward. He was killed on the 16th anniversity of Black July.
The reasons for his killing, though not justified or humane, are given in brief in the words of Prof Uyangoda because none of us is fit to comment on that scholar.
His devolution proposals which form part of the draft Constitution address the core political issues of the ethnic conflict within a semi-federal framwwork. Neelan was the first Tamil politician I met who had developed a conceptual apparatus to critique not only Sinhale Nationalism for its majoritarian hegemonism but also Tamil Nationalism for the limits of its emancipatory politics.
I am not sure whether Sinhalese and Tamil nationalisms are yet ready for such an excruciatingly painful exercise in critical self-reflection. In that I find some meaning in the rationally unexplicable killing of Neelan.
DBS Jeyaraj thinks that CBK used Neelan to her advantage by prematurely announcing her thinking as his proposals and that gave rise of Sibhala chauvinist organisations and the intrnsigence of LTTE. He was seen as one who gave an acceptable face to the world of CBK's cunningness to retain the unity of Sri Lanka and the eternal supremacy of the Sinhalese.
Quasi-Federal model also gave powers to the centre dominated by the majority to dismiss the federated province thus making a mockery of the electorates and the assemply of the provinces. That means a legitimacy to the supremacy of the majority.

It goes without saying many seemingly innocent Tamils are actually members of terrorist sleeper cells. They are involved in systematic intelligence gathering and small arms dealing.
The terrorism these Tamils Tigers are engaged in actually threatens all societies in the west.
I believe it is prudent to put a cross section of the 'Tamil' community under the security microscope... this is sure to bring excellent 'rewards'!

LTTE goons are world-class consumers of bales and bales of LTTE propaganda grass.
The capable, skilled SLA is giving double hell to the LTTE who have not come up with any surprises....hmmm EXCEPT deafening SILENCE!
Proud SLA will PICK AND CHOSSE... WHEN, WHERE, HOW AND WHAT TO FIGHT... LTTE will just take it lying down... as they have shown... this is not my imagination.
I always informed all concerned that LTTE is a terrorist outfit which lives by RHETORIC.
The cowards are ace sprinters at a real fight...
If the SLA IS DETERMINED AND would keep chipping away at the LTTE dogs for another three months... LTTE will either be at the negotiation table to save their face or THEY WILL BE A THING OF THE PAST.
It's now GOSL / SLA duty to finish the job.
