Ganja,
I am not saying it is easy but the system is better in other countries than in SL. You know it malli, There is no way your going to compare SL system to other countries.
There are always prejudice but not like in SL man. I am not talking about Tamil/Sinhalese here malli.
Even a poor Sinhalese can't go against the armed forces or Govt officials!!
tell me something..U rem there was a false alarm about schools are being Targeted and the sinhala guy was arrested and murdered in Police custody (he was found not guilty later on) what happened to the Police personal involved in that case? do we hear about it. No!!
Ok let us take the recent case of the Marathon runner whose legs were broken by 6 guys including the Major who surrendered. what happened to it!!
That is Sl for you my friend!!
Let me also tell you something when i was returning from NZ to HK, i had a transit in sydney. My wife & I checked in the baggages in NZ and it was ok but when we came to Sydney due to some Fog we have to stay overnight. We have to take our baggages out and check in the next day. They insisted it is too bulky and asked us to put in an other box (This was Qantas) we argued and we said we were not supposed to be in Sydney and the luggage was accepted in NZ by Qantas, but they wouldn't allow us and we did exactly what they told us but when i came to HK i wrote to them and they investigated and agreed and compensated us. That is justice!! |

Dear Tigress,
I heard the same story; I do not know there is credence to it; it looked more like JVP found a new reason for propaganda purposes!
Since, all Western nations have already confirmed to the Norway backed peace process, no country will recognise Sri Lanka as two countries; may be Iran to wind the west up!
I believe that India is the only country that can put pressure on Sri Lankan government to devolve power on a federal basis. I also believe that that time is nearing realisation. Niruban is absolutely correct with her assertion that GOSL will never willingly give anything to the Tamils. |

Hey Berty. Yep agree with you it better to keep one's mouth shut than the hassle. BUt I am getting a bit tired of that and I guess things will never change if we don't speak up.
NOt a nice experience with the officer. I would have got his name and serial number and complained.
The immigration guys are a law unto themselves. Everytime I go to Oz (and only in Australia) I am the guy who gets singled out for additional questions after passing through immigration and then getting my luggage x-rayed. I give the old spele about being a british citizen blah, blah, blah but no go. They say, 'but you're Sri Lankan right.....'. At least I haven't had a body cavity search yet! ;-)
absolute numheads - now there's people I truly hate... ;-) |

Ariyalai-SB,
I am beginning to resign to the same conclusion. What is next I do not know!
I too am of the same view and hopeful of wiser council prevails in the minds and actions of those in power in Colombo.
I am horrified of the sufferings, destruction and the deaths of thousands on both sides. If the GOSL insists on unitary state with some cosmetic chnages then I cannot foresee a peaceful coexistance of both communities. Sad. |

Uncle kula
i agree, this govt will not agree to power sharing but might drag it till MR's term run out.
even if the two sides cease hostilities , the para issue will not go away for the rest of the 4 years of MR's term.
let say, like sir ariyalai-sb said, what will happen to ltte if all these countries including UK want to set up federal before the end of MR'S term? Edited By - tigeress19 - 3 Sep 2006 14:41:00 GMT |

Hi Kula,
Thanks for that. Do you believe GOSL can execute a full scale war against LTTE once again? I am sure logistically they can; but politically, they will run into serious difficulties! |

Tigeress,
let say, like sir ariyalai-sb said, what will happen to ltte if all these countries including UK want to set up federal before the end of MR'S term?
That will be the acid test for the LTTE to show whether they truly are fighting for the rights of the Tamils.
They have to find mature ways of transforming themsleves into a political organization while sfaeguarding the future of theiir cadres to suit the new political realities of a civilain life.
However, its too pre-mature to expect the majority to be so mangnanimous. Sadly it may be far-fetched.
The more realistic approach would be a step-by-step process rather than a sudden full blown-up solution.
I personally feel that until India fully get involved as a sincere broker of peace, this will not be resolved. But I would not discount that possibilty either.

Jaced
Unlike u, i am a proud owner of a sri lankan passport!! and I am cool when it comes to checking me or my hand carry cos like u, i used to get irritated too easily and have complained in HK many times as i am singled out and checked at the custom every-time i travel to China (I just carry my hand luggage). One day the Customs invited me to their Airport office and showed me around and told me what they watch and whom they stop. They change their tactics at times and go for singles with hand luggage who walks fast etc..I thought to myself may be it is time i changed my attitude, I am not doing anything wrong here and why not they check my bags!!
I have become quite cool and if they stop, i give my bag and if they ask me to open i open it. It takes 2 mints but nothing to worry about!! (sometimes I even asked them whether they want to open my bags lolz).
My wife & I are singled out and Checked even on our way to NY when we transited in Japan but so be it. we are proud owners of Sri lankan passports lolz..(we dont have a choice buddy) |
