Navy trounce Sea Tiger flotilla: 12 vessels destroyed, dozens killed
Sunday, 3 September 2006 - 5:53 AM SL Time

The navy trounced a Sea Tiger flotilla off Tallaidi off the east coast in the early hours of Saturday. Fast Attack Craft (FACs) engaged two clusters of enemy craft resulting in an eight-hour battle during which attackers almost succeeded in blowing up a FAC after it was hit by gunfire.

The Israeli-built Kfirs recently bombed Tallaidi. The base came into being after the army abandoned Elephant Pass early 2002.

A senior navy official said that a suicide craft moved fast towards the SLN craft after gunfire damaged the FAC`s control panel. `Its speed dropped sharply to 14 knots,` he said, adding that swift intervention by three other FACs prevented a definite suicide attack on the damaged vessel. Altogether two FACs were damaged in the fighting, he said.

Two sailors suffered injuries in the eighth major confrontation between the navy and Sea Tigers since May 11 when they targeted civilian passenger ferry Pearl Cruise carrying about 700 troops to KKS.

Navy Headquarters said that the initial Sea Tiger movement was made around 8pm Friday. The navy destroyed 12 enemy craft including five explosives-laden suicide craft during the battle, a navy spokesperson told The Sunday Island. According to him eight enemy craft were severely damaged but managed to escape pursuing FACs. The navy broke off the engagement around 3.45 am.

`We could have wiped out both clusters if we had 30mm cannons,` he said. The battle would not have last eight hours if the upgrading of 23mm cannons was effected as planned, he said. The controversial project dragging on for four years is yet to materialize.

However subsequent reports from FAC crews indicated about 30 Sea Tiger craft were involved in the action.

Navy Chief Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda paid a glowing tribute to his officers and men involved in the battle.

`Sea Tigers were given a heavy beating,` he said, adding, `It was 100 percent team effort. The latest confrontation took place on the eve of the navy chief`s first anniversary in office. According to him about 100 Sea Tigers perished in action and dozens wounded.

Commodore D.P.K.Dassanayake dismissed pro-LTTE TamilNet report that two Dvora FACs were sunk with 30 personnel onboard and another damaged off the seas of Vadamaratchchy. The navy spokesperson said that they inflicted considerable damages on Sea Tigers in the past three weeks.

..And Ei-lai-lai-bailalan says they will not give up Samapura..

The LTTE has now decided to delink Samapura and paddle down river to glorious Eelalabailaland.

The glorious rockit firin' airy force of the Ealalabailaland is involved in the paddlin'..when they are not engaged in diggin their munkeyasses and smelling it to get a high...

By the way, that's how the LTTE podiyens get their highs, becuase the poor yakkas can't smoke, drink or play with the dingdong. The last one is reserved for the LTTE top hyenas.

The conflict that ensued in .Pedro and KKS region wasn't meant as a military move. It was executed to ensure aid doesn't go via sea since SL gov will sneak military supplies for their northern garrison. Military and basic supplies for the government will fall short in protracted warfare later this year or next year.

EP garrison lacked stable supply to water. LTTE took advantage and cut supply thereby aggravating situation for SL. This was one of the critical factors that lead to victory. Asymmetric means will once again be utilized to ensure victory.

Ok no one answered this question on the other thread, can someone explain to me how 'eight severely damaged' boats manage to outrun Dvora FACs?

http://www.tamillinks.net/archive/2006/news/sit_rep_03092006.htm

Srtharan posted that to the video thread.

I didn't realise but there were like 20 SLN Dvora FACs involved and they had to fight for over 9 HOURS! And they ended up losing 2 and wrecking a 3rd

Yeah really sounds like the Sea tigers are weak NOT!

The land itself has no value.

What is priceless is decimating the inventory and cadre strength of the LTTE. What it does to the morale can only be imagined, given the fact that most of the current crop of barely literate boys and girls joined up after the cessation of hostilities in search of a pensionable job, in the belief that commencement of hostilities is hardly likely.

At the same time, this combat experience is of great value to the nation as a whole. It provides a basis for understanding how to wage a war without political interference in military decision making. That in itself is valuable, while the overall analysis for strategic, tactical and operational purposes should provide valuable information for the entire world which is threatened by forces such as the LTTE.
