France wants info on aid worker killings probe
Saturday, 2 September 2006 - 4:09 AM SL Time

France wants to be informed of the progress made in the ongoing investigation into the August 4 massacre of 17 NGO workers at Muttur.

The government vehemently denied Maj. Gen. (retd) Ulf Henriccson`s recent claim that he believed government troops massacred them. The French embassy in Colombo yesterday quoted the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France as saying, `The French government has taken note of the report of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission signed by the General Henricsson.

The murder of the 17 members of the NGO `Action Against Hunger`, is particularly odious and serious, which triggered rightly the International Community`s indignation, has been firmly condemned by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Phillipe Douste-Blazy on August 7. The General Secretary of the United Nations on August 14 and the European Union on August 17 have expressed the International Community`s preoccupation regarding the deterioration of the security situation and the working conditions of the NGOs in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador of France in Colombo made representations to the Minister of Human Rights on August 8 and to the General Secretary of Foreign Affairs on August 11. He stressed France`s wish to see this tragedy fully clarified. It cannot go unpunished. He also underlined France`s resolve to be informed about the process of the investigation. The Sri Lankan authorities have committed themselves to conduct an inquiry and to prosecute those responsible.`
