Closure of Mavilaru sluice gates `caused an escalation of violence`
Friday, 29 September 2006 - 2:14 AM SL Time
SLMM
The Nordic truce monitoring mission Tuesday blamed the LTTE for `causing an escalation of violence` in the Trincomalee district by closing the Mavilaru sluice gates.

According to a five-page report captioned `Major violations of the ceasefire agreement committed by both parties in Trincomalee, Jaffna and Vanni between July 22 and September 25,` Maj. General Lars Johan Solvberg urged the government and the LTTE cease military confrontations. He blamed the LTTE for launching the August 11 military offensive in the north while ruling the capture of LTTE held-areas east of Muhamalai and Sampur by government forces as violations. He claimed that approximately 200 civilians were killed as a result of confrontations.

Tigers face accommodation problem in Colombo
Friday, 29 September 2006 - 2:08 AM SL Time

Finding accommodation in the city is the biggest problem LTTE cadres face when arriving in Colombo to carry out Tiger hierarchy orders. Regular raids on lodges, searching of houses at nights and the refusal by householders to accommodate strangers accompanying a relation or friend, has forced some LTTE cadres to admit themselves to private hospitals pretending to be sick.

A couple of days ago a 30-year-old woman, suspected to be an LTTE cadre was arrested by the Police Anti Terrorist Unit from a private hospital. On information received that several young men had visited her in hospital and she had always been seen using a mobile phone, some insiders had tipped off the Police. According to hospital records she was not sick.

Monitors List Civilian Toll in Sri Lanka
Thursday, 28 September 2006 - 9:50 PM SL Time

At least 200 civilians have been killed in two months of fighting between Sri Lankan soldiers and separatist Tamil rebels, and both sides are to blame, European cease-fire monitors said Thursday.

Since large-scale hostilities broke out in late July, `over 200 civilians have been killed and several thousands are internally displaced, creating a serious humanitarian crisis,` the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission said in a report sent to the government and Tamil Tiger leaders.

The monitors accused both sides of serious violations of the cease-fire, including denying people access to food, and blocking the entry of monitors and aid workers into conflict areas for investigations and to help trapped civilians.

`The gravity of the violations have led to a dangerous escalation in hostilities,` the monitors said.

Ravi Shankar gifts white shawl to Prabhakaran
Thursday, 28 September 2006 - 8:08 PM SL Time
New Delhi, Sep 28 (IANS) Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has gifted a white shawl to Tamil Tigers chief Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The gift was passed on to the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) when Ravi Shankar briefly flew to the rebel-held northern Sri Lankan town of Kilinochchi a week ago, a spokesperson to the guru told IANS Thursday.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who enjoys considerable following around the world including Sri Lanka, usually gives away white shawls to select people `as a sign of blessing`, the aide said over telephone from Bangalore, where the guru`s Art of Living Foundation is headquartered. White also signifies peace.

The aide did not say if the gift was given directly to Prabhakaran, who is at the centre of a quarter century long Tamil separatist campaign in Sri Lanka, or to any of his representatives.

Jaffna won`t be accessible overland
Thursday, 28 September 2006 - 4:18 AM SL Time
The sources said that the Navy would continue to facilitate civilian movements between Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai. The Navy Tuesday moved approximately 1,000 civilians who were stranded in Vavuniya to KKS. `They were moved overland to Trincomalee and from there taken on board a passenger ship,` a senior spokesman said. He denied the possibility of the re-opening of the Muhamalai entry/exit point in the near future. `We have so far moved about 4,600 people free of charge,` he said.

The recent battles destroyed the Muhamalai entry/exit point. The military said that the LTTE initiated the August 11 offensive with a devastating artillery strike on the point.

Jaffna-based army officers said that several soldiers and civilians died in the attack. Artillery fire also damaged dozens of vehicles at the site. A senior military official pointed out that the Nordic truce monitoring mission acknowledged this.

Wednesday, 27 September 2006 - 9:38 PM SL Time
Liberation Tigers Political Head S.P. Thamilchelvan Wednesday held discussions with the Head of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Major General Lars Johan Sølvberg, urging the Head of Mission to clarify the stand of Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) after the refusal by Sri Lanka Army in allowing the truce monitors access the Muhamalai area. Mr. Thamilchelvan questioned the HoM on the cooperation extended by GoSL in restoring normalcy in re-opening the land route and relieve the humanitarian sufferings of 500,000 civilians entrapped in economic embargo and GoSL refusal to open the Jaffna Kandy A9 route. Also other access routes to LTTE controlled areas in the East remain blocked.

Artillery wreaks havoc on - Jaffna attackers - Brigade Commander
Friday, 29 September 2006 - 2:12 AM SL Time
The military believes that the effective deployment of artillery units played a critical role in the recent battle for the Jaffna peninsula.

`The Artillery Brigade played a significant role,` military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said referring to the combined air and artillery assault on LTTE field guns positioned at Pooneryn during the August battle. This neutralised the threat on the strategic Palaly airbase, he said, emphasising the importance in combined security forces action, both defensive and offensive in nature.

Artillery Brigade Commander Brigadier Jagath Rambukpotha said that his units delivered a knock-out punch. Acting on the instructions of Army Chief Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka, the Brigade wreck havoc among the enemy, he said. Addressing a group of journalists during a recent visit to the Jaffna peninsula, the Artillery Chief paid a glowing tribute to officers and men who contributed immensely to the recent success. `It was a high intensity battle,` he said, `We overwhelmed them. We struck the right place at the right time.`

Anura complains...
Thursday, 28 September 2006 - 4:20 AM SL Time
Tourism Minister Anura Bandaranaike has sent us the following comments on the caption of our main picture that appeared on page one of The Island yesterday.

`A photograph captioned, `Between you and me`, on your front page appearing this morning has a diabolically mischievous caption. The picture shows me talking to President Mahinda Rajapakse and you state in your caption `Sunethra Bandaranaike and Prime Minister Wickremanayake do not seem to be interested in what Anura is saying`. But my sister Sunethra and the Prime Minister are well bred persons and are not in the stupid habit of eavesdropping into others` conversations. Listening to others` conversation must be common to your newspaper.`

Satanic forces
Friday, 29 September 2006 - 2:15 AM SL Time
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is reported to have asked: `Why not call terrorists in Sri Lanka Hindu terrorists'` He is using this rhetoric question as a peg to hang his argument that there is nothing called Islamist terrorists or `Islamo-fascists`. We couldn`t agree with him more. There is neither Hindu terrorism nor Islamist terrorism. Nor is there Christian terrorism or Buddhist terrorism for that matter! Terrorism has nothing to do with religion (or ethnicity). It is a phenomenon which is secular in nature, though it may come with different labels for marketing purposes like the branded drugs or like the dates in Egypt, named after foreign leaders like the Venezuelan President Chavez and the Iranian President Ahamadinejad among others.

Osama bin Laden may be hero to some misguided Muslims but no genuine followers of Islam will believe that Allah would forgive him for turning the World Trade centre into hell for thousands of innocent American citizens.

Words of little use
Thursday, 28 September 2006 - 4:24 AM SL Time
The LSSP has fired a paper missile at its arch rivals, the JVP and and the JHU. Those two parties are, the LSSP says, disseminating communalism. They, through their campaign against the CFA at the last presidential election, paved the way for the emergence of communalism in the South, it charges.

An LSSP communique, which we carried yesterday, makes some observations about the plight of the war displaced, crimes against civilians, the economic cost of war etc. One may not find it difficult to agree with the LSSP on the adverse impact of war and the need to protect civilians and campaign for a settlement of the dispute through peaceful means. Similarly, one may question the validity of some of its pronouncements.

Bibile:deeds not words Mr. Minister
Wednesday, 27 September 2006 - 9:45 AM SL Time
In an unprecedented wave of interest for the Senaka Bibile policy on rational drug use or the essential medicines concept, at least five major ceremonies are to be held this Friday to mark the 29th death anniversary of this revered prophet whose policies are being successfully implemented in 150 countries but tragically not in his own country.

Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva will be present at least at two of these ceremonies, the important one being in the morning at the Colombo Medical Faculty auditorium to mark the issue of a Senaka Bibile postage stamp. But Professor Bibile being a man of deeds and not words, slogans or rhetoric would speak loudly to the Health Minister and other politicians or top officials attending Friday`s ceremonies. He would say to them, 'If you wish to honour me, if you are sincere about your tributes, go beyond your words and implement my policies to provide relief to millions `

Chappell calls Ponting`s behaviour `out of order`
Wednesday, 27 September 2006 - 9:53 AM SL Time
Ian Chappell, the legendary Australian captain, has said that Ricky Ponting was `out of order` when he questioned the umpire`s decision in the recently-concluded DLF Cup. Chappell was talking about Ponting`s argument with umpire Mark Benson, during the final league game of the tournament, when he recalled Sachin Tendulkar after incorrectly declaring him out.

Though Chappell felt that the spirit of cricket campaign championed by Australia and encouraged by the ICC was `nonsense`, he said that Ponting was wrong. `I know when I was a captain that the law stated the captain was able to check with an umpire on a point of law, and I think this is where Ricky`s wrong,` Chappell told The Age, a Melbourne-based daily. `If you`re arguing on a judgement call, then I don`t think you should be doing that. I think it`s also in the way that you ask the questions.`
