Sri Lanka troops responsible for killing 17 aid workers: monitors

Nordic truce monitors in Sri Lanka have said that government forces were responsible for the killing earlier this month of 17 local employees of the French charity Action Against Hunger.
The Swedish-led monitors of a 2002 ceasefire also said in a statement Wednesday that Sri Lankan troops blocked their access to the northeast town of Muttur in a bid to conceal the mass killing.
`The killing of the 17 civilian aid workers in Muttur on the 4th of August 2006 is ruled as a gross violation of the ceasefire agreement by the Security Forces of Sri Lanka,` the monitors said.
The statement said chief monitor Ulf Henricsson had confidential discussions with `highly reliable sources` about those responsible for the killings.
`The views have not proved contradictory and the security forces of Sri Lanka are widely and consistently deemed to be responsible for the incident.
`Taking into consideration the fact that the security forces had been present in Muttur at the time of the incident, it appears highly unlikely to blame other groups for the killings.`
The killing of the aid workers in Muttur in northeast Sri Lanka came during a spike in tit-for-tat attacks between the rebels and the government that has left the ceasefire in tatters. At least 1,500 people have been killed in fighting since December.
The Sri Lankan government had ordered an investigation into the killings and called in Australian forensic experts to assist with the probe.
The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam blamed the government for the deaths. The government in turn accused the rebels.
Troops and Tamil Tiger rebels fought fierce battles in mid-August around Muttur, forcing around 42,000 civilians to flee to avoid being caught in the crossfire.
The aid workers were killed `execution-style` according to those who saw their bodies several days after the killing.
There was no immediate comment from the government.

To all Members...
Its only a WAR
Like I always said...
WAR GAMES-THERES ONLY ONE WAY TO WIN, NOT TO PLAY
This is a vicious circle....
Now Tamils here are all fired up because of the SLMM report and Sinhalese are trying to deny that they were killed by SLA.
Believe me....
Next time around when LTTE blasts a bus, train or whatever killing innocent civvies, LTTE sympathizers here would start denying it by blaming Karuna, JVP/JHU, Santa Clause etc.
What a wonderful world :(

SLA was responsible for the killing of 17 aid workers.
When MP Rauf Hakeem revealed the truth that the army killed 15 Muslims by shelling the schools they sought refuge and the 17 aid workers at point blank the Govt accused him of having crossed wires. Now we know who has crossed wires and cold blood in their hands.
Hakeem got the statements directly from those Muslims at the scene and not in the air-conditioned offices in Colombo. |

Repost from previous thread...
Berty:
It is possible that a couple of troopers perhaps did the massacre. However, I am not convinced of this yet. If the army did it according to the SLMM allegations, they could have easily covered this up following ways.
1. Burn the whole place beyond recognition.
2. They could have planted some weapons at the scene.
3. They could have removed a couple of T-shirts and put them on dead LTTE.
But, there were no such attempts even though SLA was in control of the area afterwards. I think SLMM was premature and irresponsible to issue such statements. They should now take the responsibility of their statements and live by them. Let the Australian experts help bring more facts to light.
Bottomline, you cannot blame the entire army. If they killed these people, they could have easily covered it up. Perhaps a couple of soldiers or LTTE. Eitherway, SLMM should have acted in a responsible manner and find the facts than expressing their opinions in public. |

Moral: A party who prevents access should be responsible for all killing and violence.
So, does SLMM have access to LTTE held area ???
'meka hariyata Kekille rajjuruwange nadu thinduwa wage' LOL

Dewey,
U do have a point...but i think this happened during the early days of the war..when the SLA was on the back foot..U remember for sometime Trinco was under severe attack and the ship was on international waters..I strongly feel this was just a panic attack by some soldiers..I am not blaming the entire Army but if it is the truth there should be something that should come out of it
Dewey ..u know very well the GoSL will never accept it..I am sure there will be a statement..I would love to see the GoSl acts on it and show the world they do take action by bringing the soldiers responsible to justice..(That is if those guys are still alive) |

Dewey,
If the army did it according to the SLMM allegations, they could have easily covered this up following ways.
If you were on earth at the time of killing you would have learnt that thev army did prevent SLMM entering the area for 5 days until the bodies decomposed beyond recognition.
Come out with more credible excuses to bury the dead-elephant in the molehill. |
