Top teams St. Peter`s and Royal meet their waterloo
Wednesday, 30 August 2006 - 4:44 AM SL Time

The 10th South Asian Games which got underway on August 18 and came to an end on Monday (August 28) took focus of all the sports news with the local events taking a back seat.

Within that ten day period many ups and downs took place in the Under 20 inter-school rugby season which is at its tail-end now with most of the schools having played five of their allocated six matches at the end of last week.

This week will see the outcome of the league championships in both the Division 1A and 1B categories where the leaders or virtually the champions of both groups being decided.

With top teams losing their encounters the quest for the league title in both groups is now wide open.Isipathana and Trinity are the only unbeaten sides in the league from the two divisions.

Wesley vs S. Thomas`

After a shaky start in the league championship the Wesleyites with an easy 36-7 win over S. Thomas` recorded their second successive win.

The outcome of this encounter was known even before the players took the field but it was not expected to be that easy for the Campbell Park boys as they ran circles around the Thomians to inflict on them their fourth defeat.

Kingswood vs Ananda

Kingswood is a team which opened the season on a low profile but came back in style with wins over S. Thomas` Thurstan and now Ananda whom they crushed by a whopping 72-12.

The hapless Anandians were just made to stand and watch as the Kingswoodians went on a rampage and in the process defeated a side by over 50 points for the second time having earlier beaten Thurstan 67-0 to secure their third consecutive win.

St Anthony`s vs Thurstan

The Antonians having started the season on a high note with a win over defending champions Kingswood fell back to be beaten by Wesley but since then they have remedied their mistakes and now are on the winning side as they drubbed the Thurstanites 53-10 to chalk up their second win.

Kingswood vs St Peter`s

This was going to be the match of the season with a lot of expectations for the supporters of both sides. It was also going to be a crucial match for the two sides, with the Kingswoodians coming out for the last time in the league and needed a win to stay in contention. On the other hand for the Peterites a win was all they needed for the league title.

But the unexpected happened with the Peterites succumbing to their first defeat in the league going down 15-26 and with the result the race to the title is now wide open with a glimpse of a chance for the Kingswoodians and St Anthony`s too coming into contention along with St Peter`s who were leaders before the loss to Kingswood. Nevertheless the final encounter between St Peter`s and St Anthony`s is expected to be the decider, with both teams having four wins and a loss each. If both teams draw on September 2 at Nittawela, then Kingswood could grab the title with a superior number of tries and a better average.

Wesley vs Thurstan

It was a massacre of the innocents with the Wesleyites having their own way and the Thurstanites succumbing to their fifth successive defeat. The Wesleyites completely outclassed their former traditional rivals Thurstan by a thumping 75-10 which was also the highest score by a team in this group. It was Thurstan`s fourth big loss by over 50 points.

St Anthony`s vs Ananda

The Antonians cruised to their third successive win when they defeated Ananda 28-22. In all they have four wins and a loss to Wesley, but they cannot be satisfied with the victory over the Anandians due to the fact they are meeting a stronger opposition this weekend which is going to be a crucial one at that.

Division 1B

In the fifth week of the league championship Royal outclassed Dharmaraja 37-12 to record their fourth straight win of the league championship. Trinity beat Vidyartha 34-3 and St Joseph`s overcame wooden spoonist Science 35-10 to record their first win of the season.

Isipathana vs Royal

Royal met their waterloo as Isipathana brought their downfall with a comprehensive 22-7 win, thus recording their fifth successive win of the league championship. The defeat has put Royal in a fix and the two teams have one more match to be played with the opposition for both being Trinity.

The Isipathanians will meet Trinity on September 2 at Bogambara while the date for the Trinity-Royal clash is not known yet. A win for Isipathana will give them the Division 1B title and also the three teams will be fighting for promotion to the top division next year.

Trinity vs Dharmaraja

Trinity are also making a strong claim to lay their hands on the title when they cruised through to their fifth successive win of the league championship defeating Dharmaraja 36-0. For the record Trinity is on top for the highest scoring done against ther opponents with 254 while Isipathana has 189 and Royal 156.

Vidyartha vs Science

Vidyartha at last won a match when they got the better of Science College 39-7 who have now lost all their five matches they have played. They are in line for demotion to the lower division next year. Even a win in their last encounter against Dharmaraja wont prevent them from going down as they have lost their matches with a big margin.
