The snide comments which are still being levelled against Pres. Premadasa - re- Gen Kobbekaduwa's death - are probably un-fair. True, he was actively supporting another (an 'yes-man') to become the next Army Commander, in preference to a a brilliant field commander, he had available for that post. That shows Premadasa's negative side - dynamic and able he was, but he carried a 'chip' on his shoulder (do'nt want to call it an inferiority complex). I believe if Gen Kobbekaduwa had lived, and if some-one else was preferred for the top post, he would have gone out gracefully - and remained silent, there-after. He was not aiming to contest for the Presidency .. that is just idle speculation, a theory floated by politicians on the other side, wanting to supply a basis for an assassination plot.
It is most likely, the land-mine that killed Gen Kobbekaduwa, and several other distinguished Army Officers was 'planted' by the LTTE at a much earlier date, and had remained un-beknown until activation on that fate-ful day.
(There still are many more mines, out there .. waiting to claim the lives of men, women and children, of stations, high and low .. but all precious. It is time we stopped the fighting, made peace .. and brought in crews to clear the precious earth - for growing food-stuffs for the benefit of all). |
