No compromise with LTTE on Mavilaru - Defence Spokesman

Defence Affairs Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday reiterated the Government`s stand of not acceding to any conditions from the LTTE to settle the Mavilaru issue.
He said Norwegian special envoy Jon Hanssen had no mandate to accept any condition on behalf of the LTTE for opening the anicut without Government concurrence.
He said as a sovereign Government it cannot condone a bunch of terrorists taking upon itself the task of opening the sluice-gate by force of arms.
Meanwhile, the Government in a media release said any discussion on the Mavilaru issue must ensure that the situation at the sluice-gate returns to its original status in which the Engineer of the Irrigation Department can have unimpeded access to the sluice-gates freely and safely to manage the water distribution at Mavilaru. This position has been conveyed to the Norwegian facilitator.
It said: `The Security Forces continue to be engaged in `Operation Watershed` which commenced last week to restore water supplies to over 50,000 people and 30,000 acres of paddy land in the Seruwila, Muttur and Ichchalampattu areas.
Last morning the Kallar Army Camp in the Mavilaru area came under 122 mm artillery shelling from the LTTE. The LTTE has brought artillery guns to this area and the Security Forces were responding with artillery fire to neutralize the LTTE gun positions.
The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) had entered this area unannounced. The SLMM had NOT INFORMED the Secretariat for Co-ordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP) regarding intended travel to Mavilaru.
SCOPP informed the SLMM Headquarters in Colombo and sought the withdrawal of the SLMM from this operational area in order to prevent endangering the lives of SLMM monitors.
In order to ensure the safety of the SLMM monitors travelling in operational areas the SLMM and SCOPP have developed procedures.
Prior to travelling to an operational area, the Head of SLMM informs SCOPP of travel plans which are communicated to the Ministry of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The ground forces are informed of such travel plans and precautions taken to ensure safe passage for SLMM monitors.
Mavilaru area has been illegally and forcibly encroached by LTTE cadres recently. The Engineer of the Irrigation Department has managed the sluice-gate at Mavilaru. In fact several political representatives and Government officials have visited the sluice-gate in the recent past.
Any discussions on the Mavilaru issue must ensure that the situation at the sluice-gate returns to its original status in which the Engineer of the Irrigation Department can have unimpeded access to the sluice-gates freely and safely to manage the water distribution at Mavilaru.
This position has been conveyed to the Norwegian Facilitator and awaiting their return to Colombo for further discussion.`

Another false hope ,They can catch the mavilaru , i thought he said 100M away from the gate few days ago.
and LTTe went with SLMM head to open the door, and they were shelled.
if the army are 100M from the dam. shell on SLMM head isnt this confusing????
i have told you people on thursday that the farmers did have meeting with TOP LTTE leaders, and managed to persuad LTTE open the door.
and LTTE accepted they plead.
but government thought they can use the opotunity to start war and attack tigers.

Don't think that the government is crazy enough to tell the enemy where the troops are now and where will be them in the next day while a military operation is sill continues.
Please accept the obvious fact that LTTTE cannot face to sri lankan forces and that is why they want to open the gate now. |

When Israel started bombing Lebanon Singhalese identified themselves with Israel, and the thrust for Tamil land and Lives has shot up to the highest level. If Israel can do with F16 and missiles why Sinhala cant do it with Kfir and MBRL?
SLMM now says that the water is/was not an issue and used as an excuse for SLA to launch an attack. LTTE used an available trump to demand some thing to Tamils and took a big risk.
At last SLMM negotiated and the gate was about to be opened. GOSL was not happy about the developments and it was ready to kill the SLMM chief.
War 4 is on, start counting the victories and setbacks. |
