Serunuwara at flashpoint - Angry villagers threaten to take tough action
Friday, 28 July 2006 - 5:02 AM SL Time

A potentially dangerous situation has arisen in Serunuwara with villagers in the area threatening to force their way into LTTE- controlled areas in Trincomalee to open the Mawilaru anicut which was closed by the rebels last weekend.

More than 100 angry villagers staged a protest against the closure of the anicut along the Allai - Kantale - Serunuwara road last afternoon by sitting across the road, disrupting transport and threatening to take matters into their own hands.

With the situation likely to get out of hand SLMM officials met the chief incumbent of the Serunuwara Raja Maha Vihara Ven. Serunuwara Saranakeerthi Thera yesterday and separately met Trincomalee LTTE political head Elilan to try to resolve the situation.

The Thera told SLMM officials the closure of the Mawilaru anicut was the worst ceasefire violation since the MOU was signed as it was an inhuman act directly affecting thousands of civilians in the area and was also a violation of the Geneva Accord.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror the Buddhist priest lashed out at the government for showing a lacklustre attitude towards the issue which has led to the destruction of hundreds of acres of paddy crops, the main source of income for the Serunuwara people.

Meanwhile the protesters who are blocking the Allai-Kantale-Serunuwara road urged the military to deal with the issue by forcibly opening the anicut, which has been closed for 7 days, or leave it in the hands of the civilians.

?We don`t want anything else. All we want is water. Please help us or we will die,? said one protestor as a serious health crisis is likely to affect the villagers owing to the lack of drinking water.

Ven. Neelapola Thera who was among the protestors charged that the LTTE leadership was ready to open the anicut but had changed its mind on the insistence of Mr. Elilan.

?Elilan had decided not to open the anicut after the Air Force bombed some of the areas on Wednesday night. We are dying because of this, so something has to be done fast or we will take matters into our own hands. The people will not be patient anymore,? the bhikkhu said.

?The LTTE has shot the head of the river and the body is now dying. We depend on the body and without it we and our children will die,? he added.

The LTTE had closed the anicut which supplies water to the paddy fields in government controlled areas as well as drinking water to Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim villagers last weekend demanding the construction of a water tank in the rebel-controlled area as was promised by the previous regime.

The military launched a limited operation by carrying out aerial raids on selected locations on Wednesday to force the LTTE to open the anicut gates and is expected launch ground operations if the rebels fail to give in.

To solve the issue, GOSL must give guns to those 100 people.
5-6 T56 will do the job.

I am sure!

During past few months LTTE have been experimenting many ways to raise an ethnic disharmony among the communities. This time they had closed the water supply. Next Time, these low grade tigers might mix poison. What has led tigers to go for such a shameful act? Is this the end of Elam?

Government should intervene and take measure to prevent public to take any action against tigers. GoSL should make sure that no one is taking the maters into their hand. Any public interference will be benefited by tigers.

Marky,

The innocent civilians will take the law into their hands and will do what the Government fail to do. It seems, The Buddhist monk is leading the way for the revival. A real Buddhist act of what Buddha said,

suchi kammassa nisamma karino'

Cobra,

The Buddhism and Buddha is a living philosophy and no body can deny that.

GOSL must act quick to do things before its too late.

Wake up Mahinda and do your honourable service, serve the nation and workers who elected you. Don't ignore civilian pleas.

Shanthini,

Mahinda must act now

In November 18th 2005, people gave a tenure to Mahinda Rajapaksha to do something that Ranil or CBK failed and hoodwinked to the people in the name of peace.

The JVP/JHU and other small parties backed Mahinda to bring out a new era which would provide civilians decent life, and now since he has become the leader after almost 10 months still we're talking the same thing 'CFA' and innocnet killings, atrocities by this butchers and on top of that these anti-social creatures have blocked the water that provides the poor people's life.

So what is our President doing? Is he in a deep sleep?

How long can we/these innocent people suffer at the hands of these ignorant and opportunistic leaders?

An already crippled, corrupted and opportunistic government doesn't have the fundamental value to listen what a Buddhist priest says on behalf of poor people who are sons of the earth.

What else can these poor people do other than taking law to their own hands? Who can blame them? Certainly not me.

An idiot thinks a sinful matter as nectar till he realises its burning and suffering. But he only realise that when the pain and suffering befalls upon him.

The bunker rat will realise when he suffers and rots in the name of sins.
