Berty,
Why ru looking at Indian Movies!! How did you get convinced that this is not a bad move..explain to us.
Not to mention that Indian movies are readily available. Our TV program directors reproduce those with Sinhala or Tamil subtitle. These programs are dominated most of the TV channels. As ML said, you find the same story with different actors and actresses.
Our TV and movie industry is dying gradually and those movies dominated the market. Local producers and directors are disappointed because they can not produce a drama and sell for Rs.200. Government is imposing levy on those movies and it is not a total ban. But they still can show educational and ward winning programs without a tax.
Open economy is the right thing for a country like SL. It does not mean that we should allow everything to flow into the country freely. Even the US has many tariffs on import to protect the local producers. As a government they should take measures to protect the local producers, talents. If we remove the tariff on rice import, our farmers have to sell their paddy fields to land sellers.
I am not saying that the government should ban everything like they did for Da vinci Code. But some sort of control is required to protect the viewers and producers. Edited By - MaKaSo - 20 Jul 2006 14:39:18 GMT |

Congratulation.
not only this but also government must appoint a committee or authority to check the appropriateness of those imported programs for Sri lankans.
For example, any Arabic country does not allow broadcasting materials to public without approval from authority.
so does India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
In japan, they have a team to investigate them too.
In Russia, fully controlled.
Other countries like China, south Korea and Malaysia do not allow western films fully broadcaster but allow only a fraction. Actually, in Japan, many parts of movie are also cot.
Why only Sri lanka allow such broadcasting.
This Must Be controlled.

It is a shame.
The first leader I saw, kneeling down & crying somewhere to stop his fellow men crossing over.
It is democracy, any person can change his political vision, select and join any democratic party,
This is not an international conflict. |

i dont think you are right ' Not everyone in Sri lanka voted for Mahinda Rajapakshe' get your facts right before you start accussing people mate. i myself lived abroad and i am a sri lankan but deep down i dont think you have any idea as to what the Middle class man is going through. the only entertainment the middle class man has is the TV. unlike you who lives abroad people here dont get quality english movies coming up everyday at the cinema halls and not everyone can even affoard to go and watch them.
by this i dont mean just because you live abroad you are minting money. Mate if you are suffering living in another country dont live there and complain. what you dont get is that no matter how much you argue its the poor middle class man who gets hits under his belly all the time. i can afford to buy my DVD's and watch at home and also get cable tv. but think of the common man. dont runaway from the question saying ' oh you guys voted for this Government and now you pay for it' thats such a typical selfish way of dealing with a issue.any individual should have a moral right to think whats right and whats wrong for him and choose what ever channel and what ever programme they want. not a stupid government bringing in stupid levy's to stop people having the little of Entertainment they have? the govt has worse things to settle. settle the darn displace people who are still living in tents after such a long time, get the cost of living down. increase security measures in the country etc. i can go on. what i am saying is this stupid Levy isnt Priority in a country where every bloody thing is a mess. get your house in order before bringing in stupid levys when there are already enough rules in the country. the problem with this country is there are too many rules and no one to adhere and to make sure people are diciplined which includes the corrupt govt, corrupt Forces etc. |

I am not sure you will read my postings
Let me explain something to u
1) Every donkey knows that all did not vote for Mahinda, but the bottom line he is the President and his decisions are final. If you clearly read my post you will also noticed that i have said this levy will change when there is a change in Govt
2)I do not understand when you say middle class people will be affected by this levy, who is the middle class in sri lanka. if your talking about middle class in Colombo, they do have the option of watching DVD's but let us take the poor people down south, do you really think they bother about international program!! what they need is Sinhalese news, Sinhala tele drama and they are happy with the local channels!!so for these people these changes will never be noticed
3) Middle class in colombo..yes they will be affected and that is why i have said in my posting that i am against this levy and the people should have a choice!! so i think your assumption on my postings is incorrect.
4)I just spoke to my sister in law in sri lanka and she confirmed to me this is due to Sirasa TV and from the 15th all they show is sinhala news and dramas and repeat of english programs of American Idol, Lost and CSI.
If they have to show imported programs they have to pay something like 90,000 rs for 30 mints if it is dubbed lolz..Have fun |

This debate could have been very interesting if shown in the TV instead of showing JUNK INDIAN TELE-DRAMAS.
Similary we could make use of TV time to eduacate people/children on all local issues using the prime time. Otherwise all people will continue to discuss at breakfast, lunch & dinner time on 'what is going to happen next in 'Praveena, Vasuda, Chitti & Mahagedera'? But they are not aware what is happening around them. |
