The new levy imposed on foreign Film and Television productions makes it almost impossible for the broadcasters to provide international material to their viewers say the Free Media Movement.

does this only affect film or does it impede into news coverage too, because if it does then it s probably a way to control the media.

i was told about a month back that cable TV was cut most likely to block out news channels.

Every donkey knows that all did not vote for Mahinda, but the bottom line he is the President and his decisions are final. If you clearly read my post you will also noticed that i have said this levy will change when there is a change in Govt '

Reply ' yes i agree with you that he is the president and no one disagrees with you.Levy will not change when a government changes mate. read the constitution. he has passed this act in parliment. if at all the govt who comes in to power again will have to again vote against it and then disable the gazzette Notification thats how it works. its a long process and plus who knows if Ranil will ever come back to power?

Berty Says
I do not understand when you say middle class people will be affected by this levy, who is the middle class in sri lanka. if your talking about middle class in Colombo, they do have the option of watching DVD's but let us take the poor people down south, do you really think they bother about international program!! what they need is Sinhalese news, Sinhala tele drama and they are happy with the local channels!!so for these people these changes will never be noticed

Reply ' the middle class families are the working class like you and i.not everyone middle class family in colombo can afford to buy dvd's and watch man. where do you think you are living in? let alone not every household has a TV in Colombo. i am from down south i come from Galle and my ancestral house is still there. so what you are saying is the people in Galle,Matara etc dont wana watch English movies? only sinhala movies? did you even think that there might be a precentage of people who do like watching some english movies? think about it mate?? i dont think you have any feelings for the people in the south. not everyone in the south voted for this bafoon.plus you and i cannot catagorise people saying they dont need english movies? how has the god given right to tell anyone to stop watching anything?? this Levy is stupid and how ever much you argue this with me or anyone its not worth it. yes the levy is in affect in countries like india , pakistan etc. but did you also realise there entertainment industry is doing well?? and that the cinema halls are much cleaner, cheaper and family oriented? do you get that in sri lanka? just becuase people in sri lanka dont wana watch sinhala movies you canot force them to watch them.the majority of people in this country are smarter than most people think they. just because some fools go to the lipton circuss and makes asses of themselvces doesnt mean everyone is the same. PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE A Demcratic right to watch what ever they want to watch and not be forced to watch the bloody govt wants them to.

Mate i dont think you understand the gravity of the issue. all in all what i can say is this govt is desperate and is cheap and bankrupt.and thats why they are doing this? did you even think ok fine the Levy is operational right? where is this money goin?

Pluga,
u should first mind your language!!
My position is clear if you read carefully..I have said let the people decide!!

a DVD Player (made in China ) is only Rs 5000-. I am sure middle class in colombo can easily afford it. You can rent a DVD for what Rs 100-.

My opinion does not have to be the same as urs..so take it or leave it!!

HI berty

Reply- do you also know that lots of people still only earn a salary of around Rs.8000 and do you know for them investing in a DVD player is the last thing on their head. its very easy for you to just say its 5000 Rupees. i dont think you have even gone to outskirts of COlombo and seen the hardships the people go through. i am a guy who has contantly travelled outside colombo and been in the war Zone as well. wat i am trying to get at my dear friend is that its not very easy for people to afford a DVD Player. for you to have a DVD player you have to have Electricity. do you know that not every household in srilanka has Electricty or pipe borne water?? think about it. its very easy for you justify your claims but its another thing when you are living that life.i am not angry at you but i am very hurt at the way you think life is so easy for the poor middle class family after you ahve lived in a First world country. thank god i never think like that and i hope you change the way you think mate. :)
Cheers

Navz,

Thank God your not angry with me but HURT? why? why ru hurt?

Ok answer me..what is a Middle class income your talking about in Srilanka..? You said most of them are getting Rs8000-. But remember there will 2 to 3 people in a Middle class family who works..so the income can reach anything between Rs 20,000 to 25,000 a month..that is for a year..Rs 240,000 to 300,000- For these family DVD player at Rs5000 is not a problem..U don't buy a DVD player every month my friend!!

show me a house in colombo or in the sburbs without a DVD player!! when the income level is Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000

let us talk?

Reply- listen to yourself mate. i dont think you read the whole posting i put in. Read t and then come and argue. i gave you a example of how people are finding it hard to live that is why i took the example of Electrity not being there in every household. read and get in to your thick big skull mate. your arguements are stupid and totally baseless. according to your sister inlaw you seem to judging how other people in this country are living. did you ever think there are middle class families out of colombo who do speak english and who love english drama's,movies Etc? did you also know that most of the population living in Colombo are from the outskirts of colombo orginally? think about what you are saying? you are making a fool of yourself by arguing on facts which are fictional. how did you come to the conclusion that there are 3 working people in one family? mate you are in a dream world. the people who i am talking about are the only bread winners in the family and their only entertainment is the Television.its very easy for a guy like you to sit at home and watch FTV and think oh wow lanka is the same. the reality is living in srilanka in the same surroundings man. plus you were talking about me being in the defence line? you wana bet? you wouldnt last a second out there man. its sad how people like you are like cardboard hearos like the JVP . but when put in a situation you guys wet your pants. think about what a fool you are making out of yourself. in this forum there are so many people who are aruging with you for the correct reasons admit you are wrong for a minute without fighting a loosing battle and becoming sour grapes! Cheers
Still not angry with you and i am just making a point to you man. i think you are very immature and you have a long way to go dude.

The heat is taking its toll:

The President said the tax would have to continue even at reduced rates, its aim being to galvanize the local sector to a goal of at least 80 percent production of local TV programmes.

However the President was visibly upset by the onslaught against the government by some private TV stations and the advertising sector since the tax imposition last Monday.

?You are not giving us a chance to breathe. The LTTE is on one side, the workers are on the other. From day one I am under attack,? the President said.
