Sri Lanka`s foreign minister will visit China next week to discuss a possible weapons purchase as the country slides toward a full-scale war with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, a news report said Saturday.
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera will leave for Beijing on Wednesday to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing, The Island newspaper said.
China has in the past been a major weapons supplier to Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment.
The Island newspaper had earlier reported that Sri Lanka was considering purchasing Chinese-made 30 mm guns to help its navy quell attacks by the Tamil Tigers` explosives-laden boats.
The rebels, who want to carve out a separate homeland for Sri Lanka`s 3.2 million ethnic Tamils, often attack Sri Lankan navy positions, saying they will not tolerate intrusion into what they call their territorial waters.
The rebels control one-seventh of Sri Lanka`s land mass in the northeast and say they have the right to use the adjoining sea.
The Tigers would be no match for the Sri Lankan army`s firepower in a conventional war, Retired Air Marshal Harry Goonetilleke told The Associated Press. The army is 150,000 to 200,000 strong, while there are only around 10,000 Tamil Tiger fighters, he said.
But the Tigers excel in guerrilla warfare and have the advantage of using suicide bombers, he said.
`You can hardly do anything against suicide bombers,` Goonetilleke said.
He said the rebels could be getting arms from Cambodia, Thailand and former Soviet republics like Ukraine. The Tigers receive large sums of money, mainly from Tamils living abroad, to make the arms purchases, he said.

LTTE has boats other than the dingies that are used in the coastal waters as suicide crafts.
What kind of deep sea boats they have. They should be homw made can carry small one man - submarines loaded with explosives.
There should be tunnels in Kilinochchi connecting bunkers.
I think, the foreign minister may be visitng like a delegation which include some military people. Edited By - AnuD - 8 Jul 2006 16:45:08 GMT |

When India is wiping their face SL needs China to help them to finish the terrorists.
This time SL needs to be strong and protect the territorial intergrity from the terrorists. |

AnuD,
Former Air Marshall Mr Goonethileke is right that our army is not a match but its the suicide bombers that we find hard to thwart. If we can employ a spy role to get info to see where these killer girls are then most of the job is done.
In the recently shown video footage there are about 2500 suicide girls ready to blast.
This was shown in an Australian TV programme some weeks ago. Edited By - Kamani - 8 Jul 2006 17:04:38 GMT |

Mr.A' Sangaree aka Aannduwe Sangaree, Arasanga Sangaree and
Achilles Sangaree= not Aachchige Sangaree.

Kamani:
SLDFs should catch a few of these Suicide bombers and should reprogram them, after that they should talk in the TV and Radio addressing other suicide bombers in Kilinochchi and all the tamils.
SLDFs must have excellent intelligence service. At present, Intelligence is far important than the SLDFs. |

to world market and china made 3 times more profit, and gave to Srilanka a BMICH. whatever the arms the GOSL and the LTTE having is good enough to erase the Srilank(perl

Varakuna,
CFA is still in the safety deposit though so that can be used in an emergency if everything goes wrong and the LTTE terrorists certainly can used that as an excuse to scream at the IC :) |

This is the evidence - how HEROIC LTTE are;
LTTE cadres open fire at Jaffna hospital entrance
Munza Mushtaq in Colombo, July 8, 2006, 10.46 a.m.. Members of the LTTE pistol gang shot at a PLOTE member and injured a civilian at the Jaffna Hospital entrance at around 8.15 am. today, the media centre for national security said.
Troops on duty were unable to retaliate as LTTE cadres intentionally used the Hospital entrance in order to provoke troops into retaliation and then to accuse troops of attacking a Hospital. Injured persons were rushed to the Jaffna Hospital.
