Horror of horrors: Abortion machines as tsunami aid
Thursday, 6 July 2006 - 5:09 AM SL Time

In a shocking revelation a United Nations lobbyist now in the country to campaign against illegal abortions claimed he `can guarantee` that Sri Lanka had received `abortion machines` with the tsunami aid it received.

The Chief Administrative Officer of the UN Protection of Unborn Children and International Right to Life Federation Peter Smith said he was certain that instruments known as the `Manual Vacuum Aspirator` were sent to Indonesia and Thailand in the guise of tsunami aid packages.

'This instrument was meant for sucking out the foetal remains in a failed pregnancy. But it can also be used for an abortion,' he said.

'I have seen them sent to Kosovo and it is a part of the United Nations Federation for Population strategy for 'family planning'.

Mr. Smith said that this instrument came along with the `Emergency Reproduction Health Kit` sent by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) to parts of the world where there was war and natural disasters.

However when contacted yesterday the UNFPA vehemently denied supplying any such equipment that could be used for abortions.

A UNPF official stressed the organisation works completely through the Health Ministry and supplied family planning equipment to the Family Health Bureau of the Health Ministry.

The official denied the UNFPA was engaged in supplying the `manual vacuum aspirator`, which is a syringe like piece of equipment, used for early abortions, menstrual regulation and the treatment of incomplete abortions.

'The UNFPA does not support abortions. In fact, we are engaged in family planning to prevent abortions since women are in danger of becoming infertile after abortion', the UN official said, adding that the organisation does not engage in any ground operations in the country.

The UNFPA said they only engage in `safe motherhood` programmes, and supply the FHB with equipment for safe child delivery, caesarean section kits and treatment for infections
