Sri Lanka braced for Black Tiger Day
Wednesday, 5 July 2006 - 1:09 PM SL Time

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, July 4 (UPI) -- Security forces in Sri Lanka prepared for `Black Tiger Day,` the Tamil Tigers` commemoration of the group`s first suicide bombing.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam hold Hindu ceremonies honoring the cadre of suicide bombers annually on July 5, the Press Trust of India reported. The day has also been used for acts of violence.

`July is usually a very violent month in Sri Lanka if you go by the previous records,` a police officer said. `We are stepping up a alert and have already increased road blocks and check points.`

In 1987, the first recorded suicide bombing carried out by the Tigers killed 40 soldiers at an army camp.

The group has carried out more than 250 suicide bombings.
