From India to India

If anyone needs proof that the LTTE has, after two decades of fighting, returned where it began, a shadow of its former self, here it is: Anton Balasingham is grovelling before India, pleading mercy for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and soliciting its involvement in what remains of Sri Lanka`s peace process. The Tigers have had to eat their own words. Remember when the Indian courts tried Prabhakaran and his Intelligence chief Pottuamman over the Rajiv killing, in absentia, LTTE apologists had the chutzpah to ridicule India by asking it to go the whole hog and hang the duo in absentia! At Prabhakaran`s Wanni press conference in 2002, Balasingham didn`t at least allow the question of the Rajiv assassination to be raised.
The Indian government has turned down the LTTE request point-blank, saying that `forgiving the LTTE for the 1991 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi would amount to endorsing their ideology of terror` and `the people of India cannot forget the dastardly crime that was committed by the LTTE.`
Norway must be baffled beyond its wits: The LTTE has given marching orders to the SLMM members from the EU, because of the EU ban, but it is seeking the involvement of India, which, too, has banned it. Norway must now realise that the problem with sleeping with either dogs or Tigers is that one has to get up with ticks. It is apparently fast qualifying for the `rogue state` status by sponsoring the LTTE, which is banned in all leading nations as a terrorist outfit. The LTTE`s move to woo India could be due to its vicissitudes in Norway, which has found the LTTE too embarrassing and may be compelled to ditch it sooner or later.
The increasing international isolation is a frightening proposition for the LTTE, because a prerequisite for its separatist project is legitimacy, without which no amount of terror is going to help sustain it. Reports of the newly elected Tamil Nadu government being in contact with Karuna`s Eastern Tigers have disturbed the LTTE in no small measure. (Karuna is also believed to be in the good books of RAW.) That may be why some LTTE websites have gone to the extent of launching scathing attacks on Karunanidhi. The Wanni Tigers may have sought to reach out to the Central Government over and above Karunanidhi`s head to preempt a possible `Karuna-Karuna` nexus across the Palk Straits. They may also have thought of turning Sri Lanka`s growing dependence on Pakistan and China in respect of defence matters because of India`s nonchalance, to their advantage by repairing their relations with India. The LTTE has vowed to launch its final war and if that threat is carried out then the outfit will have to resort to UDI, which it cannot even think of without first winning back India.
When India forced itself on Sri Lanka in the late 1980s, Buddhist monks, the JVP, President Premadasa`s government and the whole caboodle of `patriots` went on a campaign, albeit severally, to get rid of it. The LTTE, too, took on India later on, forcing the IPKF to leave prematurely. The rest is history. Now, the same forces want India to come back. The much maligned Dixit must be turning in his grave!
The question is not so much whether India will oblige them or not in the future ' it has said a firm `No` to their requests ' but whether it has got anything new to offer as a solution even if it, by any chance, decides to involve itself in conflict resolution here. All what India could afford by way of devolution in Sri Lanka without jeopardising its domestic interests is the system of Provincial Councils, which the LTTE has rejected, lock stock and barrel. That was the maximum devolution that India allowed even at a time when the LTTE was eating out of its palm. India cannot permit anything more, for its own sake. That`s the long and the short of it!
Given their desperation, the Tigers may not take `No` for an answer, and will try all their tricks to achieve their objective, but India is not likely to fall for them. For, India has what Sri Lanka sadly lacks ' a good memory. On the other hand, old birds, it is said, are not caught with chaff.

BABA,
I think it is 'Gahapu padekuth neha berey paluwakuth neha.' What they want however, is 'bendagaththu berey gahalama bima thiyanna oney.' |
