Although eliminated from the play-off for the top positions of the World Under 14 Tour, Sri Lanka`s junior tennis players performed reasonably well to finish twelfth in the 16-nation event held recently in Indonesia..
Sri Lanka was in the same group as host Indonesia, India and Pacific Oceania. Indonesia and India proved too tough for the Sri Lankans and were beaten three matches to nil, without managing to win even a set. But they fared better versus Pacific Oceania, winning the encounter two matches to one. Indika Wettasinghe won his singles in straight sets, but Shehan Gomesz conceded his match in a closely fought three setter. But Wettasinghe and Arvind Fernando won the crucial doubles in straight sets to clinch victory for Sri Lanka.
Finishing third in their group, Sri Lanka was listed to play for the 9th-12th placements along with Uzbekistan, Malaysia and Iran. Sri Lanka lost to Uzbekistan, 0/2 and Malaysia 1/ 2 and beat Iran 3/0.
?The overall performance where the team finished within the first 12, in comparison to the last place in the previous year, is extremely encouraging. We should aim at reaching the first eight next year,`` said Jayendra Wijeyesekera, Non-playing Captain of the team.
