Full text of the press release:
Colombo, 22 June 2006: UNICEF in Sri Lanka is calling for immediate action to halt the abduction and forced recruitment of children by the Karuna group. Over the past week, the agency has verified reports of thirty cases in Batticaloa district. Reports of abduction and forced recruitment of boys under the age of 18 from the area have increased since March of this year.
While calling on all armed groups in Sri Lanka to stop using child soldiers and to send all such victims of the conflict home, UNICEF is also appealing to the Government of Sri Lanka to investigate all abductions and ensure that children in affected areas are given the full protection of the law.
Recruitment of children often takes place in circumstances designed to add to a climate of fear in communities. This is already being seen in falling attendance at schools in the area. These gross violations of their rights will also expose children to brutality and extreme violence with lifelong consequences.
UNICEF is working with communities and parents to verify exact details of cases that are reported to the agency.

Worldwide Lankan Tamils
Take the conduct of LTTE is good enough to get the world attention related to minority issues in Lanka (Ok, Positive side)
However, the LTTE struggle is not the best way to deal with it. (Ok, Negative side)
But Tamil leaders can add positive way to deal with the issue via a practical, productive and nondestructive manner.
You have all kind of people within Tamils, BS, MS, PhD, MBBS, LLB, MBA.......,
Did they really use their capability to help Tamil society positive way?
At least do they talk this topic in Tamilsungam or any other occasion?
Really don't Tamils have any alternative than this miserable approach by LTTE?
Why don?t Tamils account seriousness of the strongest negative impact made on Tamils and Lankan in general by LTTE
Appreciate your genuine answer without any bias.
Thanks a lot your useful time! |

I really dont understand Karuna issue
if Karuna and Army tried to kill each other before, why are they now collaborating just to destroy LTTE?
I dont know how they trust each other, especially as Karuna may have actually ordered some massacres of unarmed Sinhalas in the Ampara District, and likewise Karuna must have seen unarmed Tamils killed by the Army Edited By - IslanderSB - 22 Jun 2006 23:03:22 GMT |

If Karuna faction is used / embraced by the GOSL, then the GOSL is guilty of recruiting children - as they are for the recruitment of children by any Tamil included by them.

If it is good for the goose it is good for the gander.
I like to see the world stop Karuna recruiting children, if he does(This seems to be an entirely LTTE concoction, when you see the source of this news) while ignoring all these LTTE suicide child brigade. (Ignoring means, they are allowed to roam all of Europe, without any obstruction. They must be arrested immediately for crimes against humanity)) Edited By - Bheesan - 22 Jun 2006 23:45:02 GMT |

Gaja,
Not only when Karuna recruits children, but also when LTTE recruits children the government of Sri Lanka is responsible. There is no question about it. I would like this so called 'International Community' hold the government responsible for not establishing law and order through out the whole country. Remember, government of Sri Lanka has allowed criminals with as high as 200 years of jail time to live free. |

| Terrorists can not change their stripes as the Tiger in the wilderness. The beast is a beast, one can tame them only for circus acts, and Karuna, Prabhakaran, LTTE , GOSL, SLMM all are part of the entertainers of this circus. |

Now Now not a word from JVP JHU THe GOSL about Karuna recruiting children, not even voluntarily forcibly, openly.
They think they can do anything, thats how desperate they are.
The forum members do not have credibility, you got to make a decision ARE YOU AGAINST child recruitment? If you are then you should welcome the statement by the UNICEF. Then your credibility as human beings go up. But by defending and blaming LTTE you and the sinhala politicians let your side down again and prove to the Tamils and the world that
you will stoop to any any level to suppress the Tamils.
Karuna can try but will not get the mass support he wants not just with Tamils even with the Eastern Tamils.
Did you see the news Mangala Aya has been told yet again by the PM of India Manmohan Singh; for god sake go and talk to LTTE and sort your problems out. There is no point you coming running to me every other week. I cannot help you!
You guys dont get the message do you. Edited By - dada555 - 23 Jun 2006 05:59:35 GMT |

Naleen,
According to BBC, another pusswedi has gone off the sea coast north of Colombo.
Is it true?
There are conflicting reports of what may have caused the explosion.
One report says it may have been caused by a floating sea mine planted by Tamil Tiger rebels but another says it could be a sonic boom from a government jet.
