The Government yesterday admitted in parliament that helicopter parts and some other items imported by the NGOs in the aftermath of the tsunami could be a threat to national security.
This was disclosed by Minister Jagath Pushpakumara in response to a question raised by JVP MP Piyasiri Wijenayake.
The Minister said parts of a four-seater helicopter were imported as tsunami aid from Germany via South Africa to Humedia Lanka International, an INGO the general branch of which is based in Germany.Mr. Pushpakumara said these parts were confiscated by the airport Customs and later returned to the company in Johannesburg on instructions given by the Defence Secretary.
Parts of another four-seater helicopter were imported as tsunami aid from Los Angeles, USA via Dubai in the name of an Australian identified as Collin Frank Twist and these parts too were returned to the company concerned.
He said in addition three vehicles fixed with Motorola telecommunications equipment was sent to Sri Lanka Red Cross Society at T.B. Jayah Mawatha, Colombo 10 by the Spain Red Cross Society last year.
The Minister said these vehicles had been taken into custody by the Air Force but a month later on the instructions of the Public Security Minister and the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission the vehicles were released to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society.
The five items of telecommunications equipment sent by the Geneva International Red Cross including two satellite phones to their Sri Lankan counterparts were released on the instructions of the subject ministry and the TRC.
The Tamil Rehabilitation received office equipment and 76 iron pots each containing 250 iron balls and 72 copper sheets from a person called Sivayogam in London. These items were released to the TRO after necessary inquiries.
JVP parliamentary group leader Wimal Weerawansa said these were serious matters of national security concern and therefore it should be referred to the Defence Ministry consultative committee.
Minister Pushpakumara said he would look into the matter and agreed to a proposal by JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake who asked him to submit a copy of the answer to the Parliamentary Select Committee on NGOs.
