Monday, 19 June 2006 - 7:29 AM SL Time

Sri Lanka judge Christopher Gregory Weeramantry, former Vice-President of the United Nations International Court of Justice, has been nominated for the 2006 UNESCO peace prize.

Judge Weeramantry will be presented the award, which carries a cash component of 40,000 US dollars, on September 21 at a special ceremony organised at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

He was nominated by the City Montessori School, Lucknow, for supporting the appeal by 30,000 CMS students on behalf of world`s two billion children, asking that their future be safeguarded against the threat of nuclear holocaust and eco-catastrophe.

Addressing a press conference, UNESCO representative to India and Sri Lanka Minja Yang said Judge Weeramantry`s nomination was an affirmation that the rule of law is fair.

I thought he ws the Chairman of International COurt of Justice.

Congrats Dr. Weeramantry who has contributed a lot to the legal field.

He was a student of the pre 1956 era. The post 1956 has not produced people of high calibre, ecen in the fiels of Sinhala literature!

I would like very much for Justice Weeramantry to win the prize. I feel connected to him after the Daily News published on 01 November 2004 my response to Justice Weeramantry's speech on Gandhi & Ahimsa. On that day, Dr. Peter Vaux of the Prince of Wales Hospital certified me to court cleaning me of any mentally disorder or illness and he said that I was following in the footsteps of Gandhi. I felt that there was some Divine connection between the two events - as if my work in responding to Justice Weeramantry protected me from going back to prison on 01 November 2004.

Congratulations Justice Weeramantry. I attended a lecture by him a few months back. He struck me as a simple, easy going and down to earth gentleman which are the qualities of a really educated person. All Sri Lankans are proud of your great achievement Sir. Wish you Good Health and Long Life for you to add to your laurels Sir.

Bonggo, this question indicates that your circle is very small and that you are not able to Justic Weeramantry as an International citizen that he has become.

CW is a good man. Deserves the bouquets.

He is also one of the World's leading legal scholars on Sharia, the Islamic legal code.
