Dhanapala to visit New Delhi to seek India`s support
Saturday, 10 June 2006 - 9:05 AM SL Time

Jayantha Dhanapala, the veteran Sri Lankan diplomat and candidate for the United Nations Secretary-General`s post, will visit New Delhi next month to seek India`s support, considered crucial for his success.

Dhanapala will arrive here on July 3 and meet Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran the next day. During his two-day stay here, he is likely to meet Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma and several others in the foreign policy establishment.

The 67-year-old Dhanapala has many friends and well-wishers in the Indian capital eversince he worked here as Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner during 1981-83.

India has not yet decided who it will back for the top job at the UN, which will fall vacant in December this year, when Kofi Annan completes his second five-year term. Last month, visiting Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera informed Anand Sharma about Dhanapala`s candidature and requested for India`s support. The Indian Foreign Office said it has taken note of the matter.

Dhanapala`s upcoming visit here and the meetings being lined up for him will provide him with an opportunity to interact with the Indian policy-makers and to present his case to them.

Traditionally, the UN Secretary-General`s post rotates from region to region. Asia is next in line. Dhanapala has competition from South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki Moon and Thai Deputy Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai.

Others aspiring for the job from other parts of the globe include Turkey`s Kemal Dervis (who heads the UN Development Programme), former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, and Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga.

However, assessing the contenders` chances, the prestigious New York-based `Foreign Policy` journal has tipped Dhanapala as the man most likely to become the UN`s next Secretary General. He gets the most favourable odds of 6 to 1 as compared to former US President Bill Clinton, who stands a 1 in 1,000 chance.

Should India decide to back Dhanapala`s candidature, his chances of success will be further enhanced.

This was instigated by the now famous media adviser whose personal friends are at TRC, the in famous channel 9 guys. What a shame ! where is this country heading ? we fools are trapped in fools paradise. Since independence we Sinhalese have ruled us, and continue to rule us but no problem has been solved by them. Time to change is now or never! Thanks to our stupid Sinhalese 'modayas' now LTTE is winning political battle against SLGovt as seen in Oslo with their superior? shrewd tactics. Its time that we invite India to walk into SL & take over us until we are cured & ready to live as a true democratic country maybe after 50 yrs from now.

Mohandev;

No one rules over anyone else, without their consent.

We each are limited by our own inadequacies, and usually find relief in blaming it on others. It apparently is the same for entire cultures.

In a long ago different life, I used to work with youth from poor backgrounds, and saw the devastating effect of psychological limitations in trying to get them out of ghetto life. Mental barricades are taller than anything any man can ever build. That is what allows a mahout to lead a ten ton elephant with a dog-chain.

The tamils in Sri Lanka refined the blame-game into a fine art, faught bloody wars for twenty years, but have failed so far to look within and understand the depth of their own attitudanal quandry. It is the day that the tamils take responsibility for puling themselves up by the boot straps instead of wasting their time, effort and energy on attempting to murder everyone else who is in disagreement with their divisive and murderous campaigns to purge dissent that things will improve for those of your community remaining in Sri Lanka.

I assume you are a relatively younger person, and am disapponted to see that even you think that someone else, in this case India, should be responsible for your community's deliverance from itself. This is exactly why the tamils will always be a second class people, in their own land and elsewhere.

The road before you is doubtless difficult, but tamil youth of a previous generation have proven that they have what it takes to be audacious. If your generation were to choose peaceful co-existance in search of prosperity and political stability, you will find collaboration from the majority of the sinhalese, if you could ignore the few racists and lunatics.

I do hope he does not get elected. His role as head of the peace secretariat was a disgrace. Never once did we see him take any initiative. He was only concerned with not rocking the boat his eyes being set on his personal ambitions. The boast that he is an UN familiar should be a disqualification in itself, the organization known to be an epitome of corruption. He knows how to play the ropes...got his son Sanjay into a top UN or international organization (cannot remember - he was in the law faculty with me) as well even though the guy academically was mediocre.

Mr.Dhanapala should advise Mr.Mahinda to accept the Indian model of federal system for the Tamils instead of begging Indian government for his UN Job!!.in which he is not a suitable candidat.

While he follows the present government's stupid war against Tamils how can he contest for a UN job. This should be given to an East european country instead of Sri Lanka.

Sandman, thank you for your insight.

I am in my late 40s. But I witnessed the by force transition from a close economy to a free for all so called 'open' economy coupled with a constitution created by JR for his & for UNPs existence, I guess he had wished there will be no opposition to rule this country for ever at least until his death. Alas, history over took him & for our 'luck' brought his one party rule to an end. But the continued ruination of this country in more than many areas are a direct result of his selfish rule, which we have witnessed since 1977 & continue to witness even after 1994. No one will be able to bring in a new constitution suited to all communities to live in equality & peaceful existence, as both the 'blues' & the 'greens' who have ruled us since independence will not sacrifice for the sake of the country but only for their own material benefits. This is very evident even in the present government. So I think India has a definite role to play in Sri Lanka simply because the 1983 ethnic cleansing done by our own Sinhalese goons well patronized by the UNP leaders, India intervened directly or indirectly by permitting Indian soil to be used by various Tamil terror outfits to train, collect funds & promoting Tamil self rule. But Indians role had to change simply because of Ltte supremo's direct action in killing RajiveG. I believe for India it is only the present Ltte leadership is the problem. If tomorrow ltte leader dies even due to natural illness, India will once again directly & indirectly will get involved with the new Ltte leadership as long as they have access to them & some what control over them in return Indians will turn a blind eye for the use Indian soil once again to be used to destabilize Sri lanka. That is the reality we all should consider. The choices open to us are very limited but for all the people of this country to live as once nation is still possible even though the govt. in power are incapable of successfully handling this problem to bring about a permanent end to this mess we all are responsible for.

How come the 'India trained and unleashed the LTTE terrorists in Sri Lanka' portion missed from your post?

Are trying (in vain) to whitewash Indian papadams?
