Hi AnuD,

Learn sinhala, be a Buddhist, then you can become even the president.

Good point, if all the tamils learn Sinhalese there won't be a problem in Sri Lanka and there is no need for a dreaming Eelam as well.

It is Tamil's choice to learn the language of the country's majority. If you live in England you have to learn English same here. Logical thinking AnuD.

Forest,
Yah I know, its fun, but I don't like the drinking part...

Last time we went, couple of years ago...something very embarrassing happened...one of our guys was so drunk and started whistling to the national anthem :(

Moderate99,

Sinhalese are the majority everything goes by Sinhalese mostly so the necessity is not there. But for tamils its the other way round they are the minority and they should benefit by learning Sinhalese and in this forum you see some tamil members converse in Sinhalese and that helps them to integrate with Sinhalese so they don't need alienated from the country or confide just to Tamils.

Anybody can learn English as that is an International language now.

Moderate,

It really depends where you go. If you go to the countryside of Sri Lanka they probably would not know English and forget English they are mostly poor people who have had not a proper education and you cannot blame them its similar to poor NE tamil people.

Moderate999,

Tamils of Sri Lanka live in Sri Lanka not in Tamil Nadu. It is to minority's advantage that they speak the language of the Majority. Since Majority Singhalese are living in the south where Majority speaks Singhalese they do not have much advantage speaking Tamil. But those Signhalese living in areas of East speak some Tamil. 10% of Tamils live in the south out of total of 14%. So obviously if they do not speak Singhalese then it is disadvantageous for them and not for Singhalese. It is advantageous for those Singhalese in Government services to know Tamil Language to provide better service to all communities. Every body should make an attempt to learn another language which comes useful in life.

English as an International language is useful to every body. But it is impossible for any country to have 100% of their people learning a second language.

Tamils may not want to learn Singhalese thinking that they could establish a Tamil Eelam, well then they could spend the rest of their lives day dreaming from stupid advices like yours. No objections.

Moderate,

It is really up to people to think which language they best feel need to learn in Sri Lanka. I think all 3 are very important and especially for tamils if they learn Sinhalese than English it will make them more homely with Sinhalese in Sinhalese areas and it may be true to the Sinhalese who live in NE to learn tamil too. Because if they learn each other's language they respect each other and less troubles.
