Lack of precautionary measures by Navy raises eyebrows
Wednesday, 7 June 2006 - 5:06 AM SL Time

Many an eyebrow has been raised in security circles by the failure of the Navy to effectively patrol the area surrounding the Welisara Navy base.

The LTTE cadres, who launched yesterday`s claymore mine attack, according to sources, had waited for a long time in a vacant block of land close to this vital camp.

Had precautionary measures been adopted they could have been detected.

A bus load of Navy personnel escaped a major calamity yesterday when the LTTE mistakenly targeted a CTB bus with a claymore mine injuring the driver and conductor. The bus, which had no passengers on board, was approaching the Mahabage junction from Ragama when it was hit by the blast. The CTB depot and the Welisara Navy camp are situated along the Ragama road and it was usual for Navy convoys to traverse the same road to reach the Negombo road.

The blast occurred at 4.15 a.m. while the CTB bus, bound for Kurunegala, was on its way to the Pettah bus terminal to pick up passengers. The bus was severely damaged. Naval convoys normally travel along this road in the early hours of the morning to reach the Negombo road for Naval personnel to be deployed at various places in the city, the the Katunayake and Ratmalana airports and other important stations. On such occasions the Navy buses leave the Welisara camp with a full complement of men.

As the CTB bus was approaching the Negombo road, the Tigers mistook it for the Navy and set off the claymore mine.

According to security sources, had it been the Navy bus, the destruction could have been more severe and would have resulted in many deaths.

The security forces launched a search operation in the vicinity and questioned several boutique keepers. It is believed that the claymore mine had been transported sometime ago and hidden in a shrub jungle opposite the sprawling Navy camp that stretches to over 500 meters starting from the Mahabage junction.

This was the first occasion that a claymore mine has been blasted outside the North and East and security personnel view this with serious concern.

Sri lankans are famous for pointing their fingers without understanding the truth. It is in their blood and that is why all these chaos.

OR when some thing appears in the media or some gossip or a phone call and that is enough for them and they will add more color to that and make an epic out of that.

There is no security lapse at all and no fault at the navy at all. It is all done by the navy to commemorate the departure of LTTE to talk peace in Oslo and it is just a celebration.

Since of late Navy leads these games to disturb any hopeful events be it peace process or impending peace or just for fun like what happened at Allaipiddy massacre.

President's top brass investigator concluded that it was the LTTE but the judge had identified the culprits and a tussle is going on with the so-called law enforcement officials who are refusing to abide by the judge's orders. That is all for the law and order situation in SL.

LTTE, such a notorious terrorist outfit and is famous for setting deadly blasts has planted two mines just outside the Naval Head Quarters to blast an empty bus!!!

There is something wrong some where. It is good for the government to get this investigated fully unlike the previous investigations. Don't send Chandra the IGP because he has already found the answer; who else it is only the LTTE.

You are right there.

Sri Lanka has to target be the OASIS OF SECURITY.

There is no point looking back and regretting. The challenge to face the LTTE TERRORISTS MUST BE MET, AND WON.

In order to do that, have we started with the kids in kindergarten? Have we raised at least Rs. 100 million for the Fallen Heroes' day (today)... to be used for enhancing the lives of the relatives of the fallen? Is there enough respect shown and felt for soldiers who put their lives on the line?

Leaders... Leaders... Leaders... Sri Lankans have heard enough, read enough, suffered enough, waited enough.... paid enough.... for heavens sake get your act together and have 101 plans to destroy the LTTE mad dogs... one way or another.

You are there to act...SO ZIP YOUR MOUTHS while working... and show us results!

Hi Keshi,

I am really missing you, happy that you are back. I asked some questions y'day in another posting and why didn't you answer those?

Anyway Keshi,

why should we dispute over these petty things, let the morons on both sides to sort it out. What does it matter to us who kept the mines at Welisara, it could be LTTE it could be JVP within the Navy, why even Douglas, Karuna or even the Jihad group?

You know the Sinhala modayas instead of solving such a simple human issue between the Tamils and Singalese have complicated the whole issue and brought in all kinds to actors to undermine the Tamils' legitimate demands and see what had happened now;everything in a big mess, no one knows what is happening, MR does not know whether he is going or coming. All Karma my dear because when you miss the opportunity then you have to repent, the chance may not come again!

So you and me too got trapped in this mess, but let us steer clear of all these complications. By the way where do you live, from your timing you are in the land of the Kangaroos?

We must sign a peace accord and we must not fight, I scratch your back and you will do the same to me.

I wanted to know whether you are a girl or a boy but I postulated that based on your stubbornness and stupidity you must be a female. But yet I begin to like your stupidity.

Please reply aney early.

As Mr.Nada pointed out LTTE is famous for infamous attacks and they never target empty buses so that it is very clear that LTTE has no connection with this mines blast.

According to his logic, LTTE were innocent and they had no connection with recent suicide attack on the army chief as LTTE never miss their target. An innocent pregnant woman blew up herself to discredit the LTTE. If it was LTTE, the army chief would have been perished.

And again, Mr. Douglas Dewanadda narrowly escaped from many suicide attacks and all those attacks were carried out but Anti-LTTErs to discredit the mighty tigers.

Definitely, there is something wrong somewhere

Question is how did navy let something like this happen? SL armed forces and the government are more of a reactive group than proactive group. Never think anything in advance; they are foolishly optimistic that everything will go their way. I bet you, if this camp come under attack ,most of the casualties will be caused by friendly fire. There are no proper processes put in place in case of emergency. Tigers really know how to exploit this weakness, that is how they got Kadiragama and the Airport. It is sad none of the high ranking officers who responsible for this mess are fired. Knowing how the SL government operates I wouldn?t be surprised all of these officers are promoted to even higher rank.
