Bhikku U`grads protest against corrupt officials
Thursday, 1 June 2006 - 4:30 AM SL Time

Bhikku undergraduates, of the Buddhist and Pali University, yesterday protested against the University administration`s delay to punish corrupt officials. They named a high ranking official and his assistant as corrupt.

`We informed the University administration and the Education Ministry about this several times. The Ministry took action to hold an inquiry, but, the University Senate is trying to suppress it,` President of the Student Union told The Island yesterday.

`There are several new buildings, but all are damaged due to substandard construction. A recently constructed boundary wall is also damaged due to the contractor`s fault.

The responsibility of selecting this contractor lies with the Registrar and Assistant Registrar of the University,` he said.

Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Wegama Piyarathana Thera denies the Student Union`s allegations. The inquiry will be held shortly, he said.

`We are not going to avoid the investigations and inquiry. We tried to hold this inquiry earlier, but the Student Union members had not come to give evidence on that day. Now they are protesting against the University administration,` Prof. Piyarathana Thera said.

Inefficiency breeds corruption.Government must tackle the inefficient and stupid system that is in operation in Sri Lanka if they are to attract foreign investment.Inefficiency is pitilessly slow and corrupt.Biggest rouges are the courts of law and the greedy lawyers and the weak judges, who allow the court cases to go on endlessly. This setup helps the encroachers to your land and wrong doers. My parents lost their valuable land in Bope,23 acres as the case went on endlessly for over 25 years, they ultimatly gave up the case due to old age,and I have been fighting to save part of my land encroached deliberately by a police officer and the new occupant who bought it from a reputed bank, though I lost part of my valuable land after 15 years of court battles, still I haven't got access to my land. This is how stupid our system is.My father who worked for the Electrical department for 42 years when died, the horrible pension department never paid a red cent to my poor mother until she died. Those who call Sri Lanka a paradise and it's people cultured must think again. We are one of the worst set of people, unless we realize that,we are forever live in a fool's paradise.I have a vested interest in my country of birth and I have heavily invested in there for patriotic reasons, but I am very critical of of the hypocrisy of the people and it's elected leaders.I am glad that some people are willing to stand up to it,and it's high time.
