Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa Pradeep Nilanga Dela disclosed at a media conference on Saturday (13) that funds for the International Buddhist Institution at Pallekele, being constructed to mark the 250th Siamese Higher Ordination in Sri Lanka, had not come from Thailand.
`The institution is being constructed with funds from the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
It is time the foundation station for the Centre was laid at a ceremony with the participation of a delegation from Thailand led by a head of the State. Yet there was no written agreement ensuring financial assistance for the project from Thailand, the Diyawadana Nilme said.
Sri Dalada Maligawa is to host an International Buddhist Conference at the Pallekale Buddhist Centre from August 9 to 11. At least 100 delegates from about 15 Buddhist countries will attend the conference the Nilame said.
The conference hall would be completed to match the occasion at a cost of about Rs. 40 million, he said.
The cost of conservation of the Sri Dalada Maligawa after the LTTE attack was met by the Sri Dalada Maligawa funds which were subsequently re-imbursed by the state. That money was spent on the construction of the Pallekale International Buddhist Centre, the Diyawadana Nilame explained.
He also said there were a number of projects assisted with Dalada Maligawa funds including the conservations of monasteries and Vihara funds for poor families children and student monks.
