The Government strongly condemns the killing of Tamil civilians by a group of unidentified armed persons in Mandathivu island off Jaffna peninsula on Saturday night.
Initial investigations have revealed that an informant who worked with a political group and his family members were gunned down brutally.
The islands off the Jaffna peninsula are largely inhabited by peace loving Tamils and they had to face the wrath of the LTTE after they took part in the general elections and supported the democratic process.
Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Spokesman on Security Matters said that the ruthless killings of Tamil civilians could very well be a part of the LTTE strategy to divert the international opinion.
The LTTE attempt to destroy a vessel with 710 unarmed security force members under the SLMM flag last Thursday was deplored universally.
Minister Rambukwella pointed out that the LTTE, after failing to create a communal backlash in the South by massacring a large group of security force personnel, on the following day, the Vesak Day attempted to attack the Buddhist Temple in China Bay with the clear intention of creating a communal backlash in multi-communal Trincomalee. Fortunately the attackers failed to achieve their objective.
The Government has ordered a full investigation into the ruthless murder of Tamil civilians in Mandathivu.
The Government has taken effective measures to strengthen security in the islands off Jaffna to ensure the safety of the civilian population.
The Government is determined to defeat the heinous and evil designs of separatist forces and to ensure the safety and welfare of all the communities in the country.
Commenting on the Kayts incident where eight people were killed in an explosion, Navy spokesman Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake said Police are investigating the incident.
He said the explosion was heard at the Kayts Naval Base and maintained that contrary to the LTTE reports the Navy, had no involvement.
`No one has ventured to investigate even if they heard explosions and had opted to wait for the Police,` he said.
`It was not safe for our officers to go there,` he said. There had been attacks on our sailors and officers when they tried to intervene on similar occasions in the past,` Dassanayake added.

Who ever does killings of civilians should be exposed and punished if possible.
We all know that LTTE will kill tamil civilians and put the blame on the govt. Further SLMM has said they can not exclude SLA hand in some of the killings. Due to so many killings in one form or the other makes it very diificult to investigate.
When ever this sort of killings occur the govt. says they will investigate but I see no final reports of these. If they find 'out side' culprits they should fully expose them. If they find that SLA troops are guilty, again the reports should be published and they should be punished so that the world knows that the govt. is serious and to restore credibility. |
