We only took a break: SLMM
Monday, 15 May 2006 - 6:21 AM SL Time

The Cease-fire Monitors, who temporarily suspended their sea monitoring in the aftermath of the major sea battle in the Vettalaikerni Sea, claimed yesterday that they hoped to resume their sea monitoring `in a few days`.

A spokesman for the SLMM said: ?we hope we will be able to resume our sea monitoring as soon as possible after reviewing the situation, following the sea battle?. The spokesperson also said that they only took a `break` of sea monitoring activities.

On Saturday the SLMM announced the suspension of naval monitoring, following Thursday`s attack, endangering two monitors, who were on board at the time of the attack.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy yesterday said it would continue its sea patrols off the north and east as usual, despite the Ceasefire Monitors` decision to suspend their sea monitoring temporarily.

Navy spokesman D.K.P. Dassanayake said that the SLMM has verbally informed them about the suspension of their operations. He, however, said that the Navy had stepped up its sea operations.

Speaking about the troop-carrier `Pearl Cruiser`, which came under LTTE attack on Thursday, he said that the ship was still at Kankesanthurai harbour, due to the current security situation. Hence, the transport of security personnel from Trincomalee to Kankesanthurai and vice versa, was temporarily suspended but small groups of service personnel are transported in naval vessels.

He said that a rescue team found the Dvora, which was damaged and sunk by the suicide boat attack on Saturday. ?We removed all weapons attached to the Dvora and found eight bodies at the location?, he said.

Accordingly, the Navy also recovered the LTTE boat that was hit with the Dvora at that site. ?The suicide boat had four engines and it is larger than the Dvora, which we believe carried over 100 kgms of explosives on board?. ?Carrying such a large amount of explosives, they definitely targeted the troop-carrier?, the spokesman said.

He said that search operations are still under way to find the other bodies. Meanwhile Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday that the government, at the highest level, was looking into the security concerns of SLMM monitors involved in monitoring the cease-fire between the government and the LTTE,.

?We have given an assurance to the SLMM to undertake their safety and security after it came under threat by the LTTE last week. The undertaking was conveyed to the SLMM chief when I met him on Saturday night,? Minister Rambukwella told the Daily Mirror.

SLMM head Mr. Ulf Henriksonn briefed the government on Saturday on his meeting with the LTTE in Kilinochchi the previous day and raised his concerns over the security of his monitors.

Minister Rambukwella said the SLMM head had assured that they were not withdrawing from sea monitoring despite the LTTE threats which was reiterated by the rebels once again last week.

When independent agencies are damaged it is a loss for the side that has the primary responsibility for their safety - not as per what others say but as per what the side KNOWS.

Miss Gaja Laxmi,

Your rhetoric is not quite logical into this anecdote. There is a gross violation of CFA and who has to pay for it?

Poor tamils need a better life than these bunch of so-called liberators for sure.

The first sentence applies to the mad dogs who have not been given the right dose of medication and coming out of the kennel and biting all the people irrespective of their race.
Vini is a good reasonable member who has come up with decent unemotional posts. What most Sinhalese members have lacked is what Vini puts forward without being emotional and calling other members names etc. So yes, I praise the young man for being defiant.

I give credit when it is due so to Vini. That is all.

Now there is another new suspect for Kytes killings, EPDP. Still it is too early to say LTTE, NAVy or EPDP. We have to wait few more days and see who really did this.

May 12) Several angty villagers of Punkudutivu had severely assaulted a person and an ardent LTTE supporter for intimacyually harassing a 10 year-old girl. Kandasaamy Prabakaran, father of four children and an ardent supporter of the LTTE from Punkudutivu who had committed this offence was later admited to the hospital. This occurred last morning in Punkudutivu. Sources added that angered relatives of the child had assaulted this person. Meanwhile, several LTTE cadres coming to know of this incident had gone to the child?s father, Parameswaran, and warned him not to report this matter to the police. The LTTE cadres had also warned him of taking to Vanni if he fails to comply to LTTE orders

My fear is that the monitors may be killed by some one and the blame will be as usual put on the LTTE and we have enough top investigators to approve that.

The top investigator, self-proclaimed SL observer, Mr. Maninder is missing suddenly after he learned that after all the bomber woman was not pregnant and also not the one he thought her to be. He used the sentence 'LTTE impregnated her, allowed her foetus to grow up before sending her on this mission'!

There were some women group too crying for the 'right of the foetus' and they too are silent suddenly.

A funny set up indeed.

Issuing a statement, the government also said, ?Initial investigations have revealed that an informant who worked with a political group and his family members were gunned down brutally.

?The islands off Jaffna peninsula are largely inhabited by peace loving Tamils and they had to face the wrath of the LTTE after they took part in the general elections and supported the democratic process,? the statement said.

If victims are EPDP, let's see whether Ananda Sangaree will make an announcement.
