Last year, this time around the gas prices went up to $1.40 a liter in Toronto. That's around 130 Rupees a liter.
Check out these numbers
VENEZUELA-CARACAS $0.14 per gallon --- Rs.4 per liter.
UK-TEESIDE $5.64 per gallon --- Rs.154.543 per liter.

world oil prices fluctuate according to availability and refining capabilities. THAT's why we should build MORE refineries in areas like Hambanthota and compete with India in the region. |

The current price in Melbourne for shell petrol is AUD. 1.39 per litre. Which is about Rs. 96.00 per litre.
I am not quite sure though that one can sell petrol for Rs.41.00 per litre so i think Ravi is trying a fast one there.
Reminds me of a story narrated by our economics lecturer who said that immediately after the devaluation of the currency against the USD from 7.50 to 15.00 (50% devaluation), an imminent pro government economist went on state televison and said that there was no change in the value of the rupee since it was still equal to 100 cents.
I am sure that all those who voted for the JVP and JHU would still believe this story 20 years on ...hehehehe |

Rswkv -
Once a GREAT economist said 'the answere to ALL our problems is to UNPLUG the economy' - may be we should give it a try.. what do you think??????????????????
Anizam,
Please don't play your crap over and over again. I have several times explained to you the meaning of Unplugging the Economy. Briefly says what JVP said was not to believe in World ban instructions for each and every economic policy in the country. I will give you one example.
Your leader Ranil (Greatest Economist of the world) in his macro economic policies accepted such instruction to discourage paddy production in S/L and give that chance to the farmers of the developed countries. He even encouraged filling of paddy lands for other purposes. You may remember in Kankoon (2002) at World Economic Forum, Great economist Mr Ravi openly said agriculture should be confined for the farmers of the developed countries who engaged in mass scale production. Thanks to the opposition of other Asian countries including India, world powers had to abandon the idea.
Further more, thanks to Prabakaran and others who voted for the present Government, Sri Lanka is today even exporting surplus of paddy to other countries earning valuable foreign currency.
This discussion is about oil not on any other issue. During Ranil's government (two years of power), world's oil barrel price was around 25 dollars. But Petrol prices in SL was 52 or above. Now Crud oil price is between 70 to 76 Dollars. If UNP is clamouring about the present day oil prices can you explain me why you leader could not lower petrol prices then? Rswkv,
GENZEN1 some thing wrong with your genes. BS.
Have you heard about the Aesop's fable about the country of blind men? Let me tell you if you have not.
There was an island full of blind men. All of them were blind for some reason. One way a normal person arrived at the shores of this island from a wrecked ship. Since he can see, he started to do things the blind men could never do. The blind men did not like that as they lose their power.
Unfortunately the blind men were the majority in the island, so that caught the normal person and took his eyes out, so everyone is equal.
This is exactly what you people normally does to anybody who do not approve your ulti racist, narrow minded, obsolete and stupid opinions. To you anyone who does not blindly follow your extremism, racism and statism, is either a (a) traitor, (b) an idiot or (c) somebody who's gene are wrong.
By the way, what BS stands for? Budu Saranai? |

| The Price of petrol in Australia varies from state to state. It may be Aus$1.39 in Melbourne but in Tasmania it has hit the Aus$1.45 mark in the NT it's slightly cheaper. In NZ the price of a litre is NZ$1.65. So the price in Sri Lanka has to be around the Rs.96-100 mark. The difference is that in SL Rs.96 is a huge amount for petrol and people feel the pinch very badly but in Aussi or NZ that price is 'chicken feed' and though there may be 'rumblings' by the people in Aussi and NZ. In SL the people are 'grumbling'! Now in SL a price of a tiny economical car like the Holden Cruze (marketed in SL as Chevrolet Cruze/Suzuki Swift) costs Rs.19 lakhs for a 2004 model. That kind of money converted to Aussi or NZ dollars would buy a luxury car. That is the price people in SL are made to pay. |

By Leary Beekmeyer
The Colombo Fort Magistrate discharged Ravi Karunanayake MP and his former Secretary Harsha Wickremesinghe for alleged criminal misappropriation of CWE funds amounting to Rs. 15.6 million in connection with a fraudulent lease transaction to purchase a building at Vauxhall Street.
Magistrate Namal Bandara Balalle discharged the suspects as the Attorney General had informed that there was insufficient evidence to file charges.
