Japanese Special Envoy Yasushi Akashi will hold talks with President Mahinda Rajapaksa today to discuss the current stalemate on the resumption of talks between the Government and the LTTE.
The President is expected to brief Akashi on the Government`s stance on the current situation. The Japanese Envoy met Peace Secretariat Head Dr. Palitha Kohona and discussed in detail the planned resumption of talks between the Government and the LTTE. Dr. Kohona commenting on the talks, said the Government would seek Akashi`s assistance in resuming peace talks.
Akashi will travel to Killinochchi tomorrow to meet the LTTE`s political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvam and the Head of the LTTE`s Peace Secretariat S. Pulithevan.
Earlier, Akashi`s attempts to meet LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran were turned down. LTTE media spokesperson Daya Master has told Japanese officials that the meeting with Prabhakaran won`t be feasible, but the LTTE`s political wing leader Thamilselvam will be available for talks.
However, tomorrow`s meeting between Akashi and Thamilselvam was not confirmed yesterday.
The Japanese Envoy who is on his 12th visit to Colombo since the Ceasefire Agreement was signed in 2002 will travel to India after winding up his trip in Sri Lanka.
